To build freighters you need to research trade which is down the comm theory tech path, and then you just right click on the planet you wish to trade with. To understand other races you need to research universal translators which is right after comm theory.

Communications Theory. The yellow research buttons. You need to research that, then research the Universal Translator. Then you'll be able to understand other races. About trading, as Norin mentioned, you need to buidl Freighters and then send them to other race's planets. And it'll start trading automatically. Keep in mind that the more populated the destination and departure planets are, the more money you get. Also, the farther they are, the more money you get. Hope this helps!

You set the percentage of reseach under the "Domestic Policy" screen in the "Economics" tab.

You build frieghters on your planet and send them to your opponent's planet.

When you find a ship in space, it might be out of your empire's range, so you have to fly it back toward your planets. Just select the ship, scroll the map back to where your planets are and right-click there to send it back into range.

Research: On your "empire" tab (3rd button on the bottom, first tab on the spreadsheet) there are 3 sliders. One is for Military spending (ships), one is for Social Project spending (planetary improvements),and the third is for Research (amount of money put into science, shown as beakers on your planet's production screen). When the number of beakers produced by all your planets add up to the cost of the Tech Advance you're researching, you discover that tech.

At start (i.e, spending your first 1000gc's)it's a good idea to set your sliders at 60/20/20 or 80/10/10, putting the majority into whatever field you need the most of (Military to produce colony ships, Social to build soil enhancers/banks, or Research to get a particular Tech like Universal Translator or Trade. Note: Medical Theory ---> Zero Gravity Research is also a very good initial path to take, because then you get Research Labs to build, which is one of the cheapest and best improvemements in the early game. Having them on your starting planets gives you a strong early boost to your research. It is how the AI gets ahead of you on Techs early on.)

Trade: When you research Trade, you unlock the Freighter. This ship lets you create trade routes with AI planets. Send the Freaighter from your world to one of the biggest AI planets. As soon as it reaches there, you will get a popup saying that a trade route has been established. From then on, as long as the AI doesn't attack it during a war, you will get a certain amount of extra money each turn. The longer the route and the bigger the star systems the freighter goes between, the more money you'll get.
