GalCiv Writer

GalCiv Writer

A beta version of my Event Writer program is now available for any hardy souls who'd like to give it a try.

You can find a screenshot here:
http://www.ctuit.com/bill/galciveventwriter.jpg

You can find the instructions file here:
http://www.ctuit.com/bill/EventsInstructions.txt

This program has *not* been put through vigorous stress testing, so I do not recommend you install it without knowing what you are getting into. It will make several backups of the .event files in case something goes awry, but if you are not comfortable finding/renaming files on your hard drive, I highly recommend you stay away for the time being. In addition, as mentioned, this program is in a fairly untested state, so if this makes you nervous, stay away as well. I can confirm that GalCiv will load my modified event files, and fire off the events, so all seems well, but I only tested it on 4 machines that might not be representative of the general population (Win98, Win98SE, Win2000, WinXP, that's the extend of my testing facilities at work ;p ) Proceed at your own risk.

If you are interested in beta'ing this program, please contact me at:
bsheely@prodigy.net
and I will e-mail you a self extracting zip program with the install package. It is 1.7 megs, so if you are on dialup you'll have to be patient.

Future updates will be available via http download.

I moved the Events onto a separate form at the last minute, in anticipation of *maybe* adding more editing screens for techs, UP issues, SB modules and the like (no promises!), so in order to get to the events you have to select Edit>>Events.

The install package will add a program group, the default installation location is C:\GalCivWriter.

Please post here with any questions, comments, and feature requests.

Thanks!

#220 by Citizen Lothmorg the Red - 9/15/2003 11:24:59 PM Try 2.0 instead of 2,0.

Lothmorg the Red you're right! :D The GalCiv Writer turns the values into #,0 instead of #.0 as it should be.

HawaiiFive-O, I hope you will find the time to look into this matter. I think it's a very small bug.

Me again. HawaiiFive-O, about the ","/"." issue. It turns out to be a regional thing. On my PC the decimal symbol is a comma instead of a point. Problem solved! Sorry for the bug alert. Have a nice day! ;)

Is the program working with the new version 1.10? Or some changes maybe needed?

Whoops, sorry I've been out of touch guys and gals. I've been very, very ill but have finally turned the corner (crosses fingers).

OK, so to catch up:

I've got two questions for ya. When making a new event is it ok to use 24/16M PCX images instead of 8/256 ones? Stardock seems to use those. If I have to reduce to number of colours it really ruins my event image.
End of quote

I've only got it to work at 8/256, 640x360.

And the second question... I created an anomaly which should increase my survey ship's defenses by +2 points (Power=2,0), but when came across this anomaly in the game my defenses went from 44 to 946 (or something like that)!?! Ehhh, that's 902, not 2. What did I do wrong?

It's the regional settings for a decimal point. Orangebear had this same problem. I haven't thought of a clever solution to this problem yet. :)

Thank again for the Writer!

You are welcome!

Hey Hawaii, Love the program hope to see more updates from you!

Next update will be this weekend. I've just got to download the X-Pack and look for more changes and then compile. I've been keeping up on the changes as Stardock put them out so I should be in good shape.

Version 1.3, which will support the X-Pack changes will be out this weekend. Stay tuned.... :)

Thanks bud, can't wait to start all over again. Do you think that the old mods should be redone, or will they work with the exp pack?
All the mods that I've downloaded (or created myself) seem to be working fine with the XPack....

HawaiiFive-O,

I'm looking forward to the XPack update. The latest version is nice, too, for all the functionality. Thanks. :)

(and sorry I had to stop beta-testing early on...work, work, work).

Both the Writer and GalCiv work just fine with mods written for older versions. 100% backwards compatible.

Version 1.3.0 is posted. It's got some bug fixes + it fully supports the changes made to GalCiv by the X-Pack. Grab it while it's hot! :)

I have an English.str file. It has lots of changes done to it for the 1.05 game. I was wondering if there was anyway to move it over, merge, or something else so I do not have to re-write, copy-paste, all the changes over to the new English.str file.

Try using the 'Synchronize 2 Files' function in English.str editing.

Instructions in the Help file.

I use it all the time, it works like a champ.

Cool good news, time to get to work. Hawaii did you check in miscellaneous the Redneck Party I created?
Interesting- i can't run the writer program any more- I get errors on startup. Error 339... GVBOX.0CX missing? :sniff!:

Ok, figured it out- I had deleted the install and added an update over no base install. Ooops.

Hey guys. I finally have decided to look at modding. Anyway, I downloaded the Writer and installed it, then downloaded and installed the latest update. Something must have went wrong though, because there's only two options to mod. I'm at work and can't remember which ones, but what's the deal? :notsure:

Please remember, I'm a total newbie on the mod forums...be gentle. :D
Reply #248 Top
What do you mean by options, like only anomalies and events?

That only happens in the old version of Galciv, in the new version you should be able to create in any of them.
Hmmm...wonder what I did wrong then? I'm only getting two (I think it is anomalies and something else). Do I even need to download the updates? Or should I just download the Writer and use it by itself?
I know that when you go to start in your toolbar at the bottom of the page and you look for galcivwriter it should give you the newest update version, try that and let meknow how it goes.
