Launching colony ships

When I launch a colony ship, it automatically takes half the population of the planet with it. Is there a way to control that? If I can't find a planet to colonize, how do I unload the colonists back to some other planet I own?

While the ship is still in orbit click on it then use the sliding bar below it to load as many or as little colonists as you want.

To unload colonists on a planet, go to that planet's orbit and do as described above. Works for me.
