Saturday Status Report (4/5/2003)

We put up 1.02 tonight. We wanted to do this as a beta but we were running late and didn't get it up until after the IT people left and we're not totallys ure how to define something as a beta on the new system.

Anyway, it should be very solid, they only "beta" stuff would be some AI tweaks that were done to make the game easier at lower levels. And the other beta thing would be the United Planets issue on welfare that we're still tweaking.

But this version has some worthwhile new features including:

+ Option to have ships leave orbit when they're completed
+ You can use the zoom thingy at the top right to toggle between the sector map and the planet list when looking at a star system. Very VERY handy.

Plus some playability tweaks. Morale is a bit easier to keep higher. Some economics tweaks were made so that planetary improvements now get 40% of their bonus as "free" (efficiency) whereas before it was only 33% of it was free. Net result, building improvements will increase your production with more of it being bonus.

SDC seems to work well enough. The sheer number of updates already has impressed me. In fact, this is the first PC game I've purchased in over a year. I was honestly fed up with the whole scene. I've played this game through once and now I'm completely hooked! Update once a week or once a month...the game is pretty darn good as it stands right now. Thank you! :CONGRAT:

I have had a problem with trade routes. We are supposed to get 3 by default, and an additional when we research advanced trade. Well I did....but still won't let me create a new route, saying we are maxed out. When I went up to intertsellar trade, or whatever the next jump is, it did give me one more route, but I am still mad that I am one down.

Also...any chance of getting a feature where ships guarding a planet are not shown on the ship list?

Brad,

Re: Post#44. A bit rough, I think. No, I flatly refuse to wait. I dislike your tone in that post as well. Maybe you forget all the positive raves you and this game have gotten. Don't get so crouchity over a few grumbling gripes, please. Geez. ;p

And just so you know, now that I know how to get around the oddness of Stardock Central, I shall tolerate it, but I'll never like it as it stands.

Seriously, Brad, don't let the few loud complainers get you down on the majority of us. I think most of us LOVE and HIGHLY APPRECIATE the amazingly frequent updates you give us through SDC and would very much like them to continue as often as you feel able to support. Obviously there are a few kinks here and there with SDC and there's a bit of a learning curve (which people ought to be able to get around by reading through the Sticky FAQs on this forum, I'd think), but once you get the hang of it it's a phenomenal tool. :)

Anyway, I can understand you getting irritated by the complaining and negativity, but you've just got to expect a good amount of that. It happens on every game forum, with every new game release, that I've ever seen. My advice would be to help the people who are reasonable and want help, but just don't worry about the ones who are belligerent and/or don't want to work with your incredibly generous updating scheme.

And to the people complaining about how SDC updates aren't fair to those having problems with it. Two things:

1) If you've been around here for any length of time, you'd know that the super-frequent updates via SDC and the less frequent stand-alone updates were part of Brad's advertised plan from the beginning. He's been straight with all of us from before the game even released. So don't claim you're getting gipped or there was some kind of false advertising because that's simply not true.

2) These incredibly frequent updates via SDC are amazing and AFAIK they are completely unprecedented in the gaming industry. Name one other company that has ever even *tried* to get this many updates out this quickly to its customers. Even the lengths they've gone to and are continuing to go to to get out stand-alone updates is much more impressive than any other game company.

So, I'd say just relax and play the game. Have fun with it. Assuming you're not having nasty massive crashes and lock-ups, you don't really *need* any of these updates to play the game. So, just sit back and wait for the stand-alone patches to be uploaded to the website and grab those.

Small side note. Tools/Settings/Discussion/Check for messages every ?? stuck at ten minutes. This is new as I am used to resetting it from 2 to 1 minute after a SC update so I noticed. And had suspected something simular lately.
Small issue for myself as I just rightclick Rest list every couple minutes, but thought that may drag on resources.

On another note; Brad I know you are an artist. And have an empassioned disposition at times. Looking over your post of late and the fencing at Avault I have come to the decision you are in need of a good 5 hours of Warcraft III with a chair under the door knob and the phone lines unplugged. Take care.

The Autolauch is great, really great, besides for colony ships / transports. The Autolaunch loads - i think - automatically half the systems population. No problem for transport, just click them back to system and then reload them with the amount you want. But colony ships ... No chance for reloading, because ship will be gone :-(. Can't there be a Autolaunch that asks you for the amount of people to be loaded? Or an Autolauch for all ships besides colony/transport ships?
By the way - while that shifting of millions of billions of people is easy to handle, its totally unrealistic. I am able to build a ship (the colonyship) of the size of the terrorstar right at the beginning of the game. There should be stricter restrictions to the amount of people to fit on a ship (colonists and soldiers). I understand you have to do redesign than to devide between soldiers and normal people (Remaining Soldiers became inhabitants after successful invasion of a world).
Keep up the great work!!!

I agree..exclude Colony Ships, Transports, and Combat Transports from the auto launch.

Or, just make it so that colony ships can be sent back to orbit like transports can be.

I agree also, please dont let ships that carry people be autolaunched. Also, the setting seems to be star specific, instead of planet specific. It would be nice if it was planet specific.

Oh and, what is the 'show all' button on the trade tab of the domestic policy screen supposed to do? :)

Originally we had transports and colony ships excluded but we know from experience that this would get reported as a bug if they didn't auto launch. Just don't use auto launch when you're building a transport or colony ship.

OK, at this point, you -have- to be deliberately ducking the Show All question. :)

Yeah, I'd say so.

Err... if we can get back to complaining about bugs :)

AFAICT, the only problem with auto-deorbit checkbox is that it doesn't refresh when a new planet comes up.

Also, it seems that if an auto-attacking ship's target gets destroyed by someone else, the ship's orders are not updated.
