Are technologists a one trick pony?

Anybody win at half decent AI by playing technologists. Seems like its quite a disadvantage?Because your basic money seems to come from tech discoveries.

I have a sneaking suspicion that technologists suck. being able to pump more money into research(that IS what +research does isn't it? No free research?) really isn't that good.

I won on a gigantic map against all bright AIs. Their bonus can be helpful, although I think on smaller maps other parties may be a better bet.

Agreed. I tend to avoid the parties that allow me to spend more money in favor of those that get me more money. Sure, there are times that I'm making money faster than I can spend it, but that's less common than when I can't pay for everything I want.

Technologists, hmm, that is all I have played so far!

I have only won one game medium size on beginner AI's.

Guess I will try another vantage point next time.

Actually you get 2/3 of the bonus for free. You only pay for 1/3. In +production you get 1/3 for free, and pay for 2/3.

I won on a large map with 2 normal/ 3 intelligent as the technologists. I used my picks on an additional +50% tech and +1 ship speed. It was a killer combo; in no time I was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else in tech. And with good enough tech, you're leaps and bounds above everyone else in all the other categories.
The beginning was a little tricky since the smarter AIs wouldn't pay out much for my tech, but after that things took off. I don't know about using the technologists without the extra bonuses from picks, though.

Oh yeah, and don't forget the +1 sensor range. Not huge, but it is kinda useful.

I think it makes sens to give techies a little boost in production although I guess you could modify it. :notsure:
