To U.S.A. Citizens, read this...

or else...:)

Dear Civilians,

We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation has many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military.

For those of you who can't join, you can still lend a hand.

Here are a few of the areas requiring your assistance:

1. The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the
playing of the National Anthem ... kick their butt.

2. When you witness firsthand someone burning the American Flag in protest
.. kick their butt.

3. Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest
amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise,
quietly pull them aside and explain how these Veterans fought for the very
freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices
these Veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a
Disabled Veteran kicks their butt.

4. (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were.
Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDU's), telling others that you used to be
"Special Forces," and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay
if you were still seven. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get your
butt kicked.

5. Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, "Do you
fly a jet?" Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance
deserves an butt kicking (children are exempt).

6. If you witness someone calling the U.S. Coast Guard non military, inform
them of their mistake ... and kick their butt.

7. Roseanne Barr's singing of the National Anthem is not a blooper ... it
was a disgrace and disrespectful. Laugh, and sooner or later your butt will
be kicked.

8. Next time Old Glory (U.S. flag) prances by during a parade, get on your
damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart.
Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying her
... of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe butt
kicking.

9. What Jane Fonda did during the Vietnam War makes her the enemy. The
proper word to describe her is "traitor," Just mention her nomination
for"Woman of the Year" and get your butt kicked.

10. Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or a
veteran. We are Americans and we all bleed the same regardless of our party
affiliation. Our Chain of Command is to include our
Commander in Chief. The President(for those who didn't know) is our CIC
regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens
inside those big important buildings where all those representatives meet.
All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the
situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. The military
member might direct you to Oliver North. (I can see him kicking your butt
already.)

11. "Your mama wears combat boots" never made sense to me ... stop saying
it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and therefore, could kick
your butt!

12. Bin Laden and the Taliban are not communists, so stop saying "Let's go
kill those Commie's!!!" And stop asking us where he is!!!! Crystal balls
are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me ... if you see
anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers, let me know, so I can go
kick their butt.

13. Flyboy (Air Force), Jar Head (Marines), Grunt (Army), Squid (Navy)
etc., are terms of endearment we use describing each other. Unless you are a
service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. That could
get your butt kicked.

14. Last but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military,
support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious
holiday that you enjoy with family and friends, please remember that there
are literally thousands of sailors and troops far from home wishing they
could be with their families. Thank God for our military and the sacrifices
they make every day. Without them, our country would get its butt kicked.

"It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us the freedom of the
press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet, Who has given us the freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, Who gives us the
freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and
Whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the
flag."

Please listen so I won't have to kick your butt!

I got this from a friend of mine who also was in the service. Read it so I won't have to kick your butt..:)

Your article is very well written, The part about every AF member not being a pilot was hilarious. I was in the AF for 8 years on active duty working on ICBM's. I got asked all the time if I was a pilot or if I could get them a ride in a plane. I continue to serve in the AF Rerserves, I figure someone has to protect this country I love

Good article.  I live on an AF base and the anthem is played at 1700 daily for retreat...the amount of kids who totally ignore the music and just continue to play is disgraceful (adults too).  I was so proud of my kids last week...the music started when they were outside, and they stopped what they were doing and stood with their hand over their hearts...and then told their friends to do that same!

I liked what you had to say about people who weren't in the military as well...every year at the open house air show we get those guys out here, trying to impress people by saying they were S.E.A.L.s or spec. ops.......

Gotta love those guys who pretend they were in the service. Takes all of 40 seconds of conversation to figure out they're full of crap.

Yes, it does.  I've had the privilege of meeting former seals and spec. ops. guys...and they're not very forthcoming with their stories and qualifications.  The ones who are pretending will tell you they were a seal as they're shaking your hand to introduce themselves.  We even had a contractor who painted our bathroom who'd brag about being a a MC sniper with a SEAL unit......he was later subject to an armed take down (in which my husband participated) for possesion of narcotics on a military installation, but that's a whole other story.

Lol. Not exactly the best way to put it Dharm. Maybe call it 'Day of Fun' from now on. You know something I thought is neat about the word 'retreat'? The North Vietnamese Army during the war, their field manuals never had the term 'retreat' anywhere. They called it "tactical withdrawal" or "organized withdrawal", I think the former. I thought that was interesting. Peace.

Having recently completed a post about homosexuality and homophobia, all's I can say is I notice there's an undue fascination with butts in your posting!

(PS - Yes, that's humor, in case you felt your masculinity challenged ... ... again)

After reading this, I finally realized why it's so bad to burn the American flag. The American flag represents America, and by burning the flag, they are symbolizing death to America. I think a more powerful message would to clean an American flag covered in mud and dirt.

My Grandpa was in WW2.  It think he'd rip your arm off and beat you with it if he saw you burning a flag.

I have always considered burning the flag a greater act of patriotism than killing people because your government tells you to. I know this is hard for many to understand but being able to burn our flag actively symbolizes what is great about this country. IMO wanting to hurt people because they burn the flag is extremely unpatriotic.

You know what also actively symbolizes what is great about this country? Being a Nazi, because in Europe, you can't be one, but America is so free that you can be one, so therefore Nazis are the most patriotic people of all.

That's what it's called, Todd.  'Retreat'.  It's when everyone 'retreats' from their posts and go home for the day.

I didn't miss his point. Sure, what makes America great is that you could be a Nazi and burn flags and eat dog crap, but that doesn't mean people who do it are patriotic for doing so.

Did you ever think flag burners are just in Love with their country so much, that they are ashamed of what the flag is representing at that point in time? surely you can acknowledge any flag burner brings an issue to the forfront?

American's burning the Stars and Stripes represents patriotism for my money... being a Nazi has nothing to do with patriotism, so i dont know why you brought it into the argument...

Personally, I could never burn the Australian flag... but I can understand why others might want to... and if they did, it would sure make me question their actions, and the motives behind it...

The problem is that the flag doesn't just represent a single issue that they want it to represent. As I said, it'd be a better show to see them clean a dirty flag. The dirt could represent the problem that is bothering them, and they could show what they want to happen. Of course, it wouldn't have the shock value that burning a flag does, so they wouldn't do it.

I was assuming that he meant that burning a flag was patriotic because it's exercising a right that Americans have that some other people don't... just like being a Nazi. If that wasn't the point, then I'd like to know why he thought it was such a patriotic act.

I'd do that for somebody who did what I said about "cleaning the flag" or set themselves on fire. The first makes a better point than burning a flag and the setting on fire shows how dedicated they are to their cause.

I am not sure that focusing on flags or anthems or symbolism does anyone any good.

For those of us living in the United States: we should be good citizens.  Follow the laws, vote, clean your lawn, help out around town, don't make an ass out of yourself when traveling abroad, etc.  That's the way to make our country good.

I think that a lot of Americans get way too wrapped-up in their own national symbols.

Every country has its own flag and national anthem.  So what?  It is just a marketing tool.  Street gangs have hand symbols and tags that they use as marketing tools too.

I like my life in America and I am a good citizen, I respect the forefathers and veterans; but I don't want to be so absorbed in symbolism.  I think that it distracts from the actual issues.

I never thought of it like that I suppose... you are right... I dont think anyone jumps for joy when they burn a flag... they do it for shock value...

"I'm an ammendment to be , I said ammendment ot be, and I just hope that they will ratify me... because there are a lot of flag burners who have got to much freedom, I want to make it legal for policemen to beat them, cause there are limits to our liberty!!!"

Anywho... JB - you get an insightful... symbolism most certainly does detract from the real issues...

I knew I was opening a can of worms with this. Unforfortunately I am probably not articulate enough to explain my posistion succinctly, but I will give it a shot.

Which is more important, the symbol or the ideals which that symbol represents?

To me, the answer is that the ideals are far more important than the symbol. But unfortunately people tend to personalize symbols and therefore consider an attack on the symbol to be an attack on themselves, and react accordingly.

This is sad.

Being an Army wife and seeing the way other civilians act at times is very distressing. I enjoyed this post, Shadowwar, and some of the comments were, well, interesting. Keep up the good work!

I think one of the reasons why I think that flag burning is so disrespectful is that the flag and its use has a legal set of rules with it.  If the flag needs to be decommissioned, the only proper way to discard it is in a ceremony were it is *respectfully* burned.  Yes, some may just view it as a "symbol", but try to tell a war vet who watched their buddy get blown up while trying to keep the flag raised that is "merely a symbol".

Respect is something that this country really lacks in this day and age.....but that is a totally different rant.

Thanks for the article SW!
I got to teach my son's Cub scout troop how to burn and dispose of flags that are no longer
servicable. it was a privelege. We may bitch when we are on duty and have to put up the colors in the morning with everyone watching, but don't let me catch you running for the building so you won't have to stand at attention and salute. "I have some corrective training for you!"
