Text files

Are they accesible?

I have something in mind, and it´s about making an unofficial translation of the game texts to spanish. Since we don´t have release dates for europe, and it´s less than probable to have the game translated, I think it would be a major boost for the spanish Sins community.

The point is that I simply don´t know where to start from, and don´t even know if the text files are accesible. Anyone knows?

Thanks in advance.

Just open the String\English.str file and have at it in notepad, shouldn't be much more to it than that :)

Pretty much everything is in the strings file, from button names to ship descriptions/names, to various notifications and all that. There are over 5,000 strings in the file, so it might take a bit :P

I'm sure this question will be asked for those who want ro regionalize their mod, but will there be the ability to have additional .str files for different languages? for example, I'll use Bel's situation. For him, is there a way to have a spanish.str file with his translations and be able to select the language in game, or will he have to edit his english.str file to have spanish as a mod instead?

There can be as many string files as you like, though AFAIK you'd have to set a flag in the registry to tell the game which to use (that would normally be set at installation on a multilanguage game disc).

Oh goddy. A registry hack. Wonderful.  :p
I can perfectly understand why that perticular design choice was made, it does take an additional step for anyone who wishes to regionalize their mod. They would need to edit a copy of their language file to be in whatever language they're working on, then when they're done and satisfied, rename it. Lather, rinse, repeat for each language they want to add in. For the users, it would be seamless. Their game would just see the one it needs, if we get the naming conventions exactly right.

Thank for the replies. I found the file and it´s pretty big, so I won´t release a Spanish.str for a while :D

I´m using this file as a mod, and it works quite well, but I suppose that every mod would need its own regional file.

By the way, this will be a bigger project than I thought at first, I´ll keep you updated.

Thanks!
