Stars - do they have a point besides looking pretty?

Do Stars in single system have a point besides just looking pretty? Do you get a bonus or something when fighting within a Stars gravity well?

I've only played maps with single stars so far so I'm just wondering.

They serve as a way to "skip" planets by sling-shotting around the star, and the fast antimatter regen is good for using them as a staging area before an attack.
