How many ships total can one get in this game?

Was reading on gamespot, and someone said only 200 ships? But I've seen pictures and someone had thousands.

Would like to know, because 200 doesn't seem like much since I'm planning on playing on the biggest sized random map and my forces would be spread out pretty thinly.

You can have 2000 fleet points (ignoring Vasari research techs to increase that further) at maximum research. That turns into 400 cobalts... or 40 capitol ships. Or 200 kodiaks.

That is a lot of ships.

Try playing on the largest maps before you say its not too terribly many ships.
