Starting Out

How to start?

Hello everybody. I've played a few games so far. One or 2 with each of the factions, but I didn't finish a couple of them.

I was just wondering what you guys do when you first get in the game? I build a capital ship builder and upgrade the asteroids around my base. At the same time I pump out 2 scouts and set them to explore. The problem I'm having is that in all the games I've played the scouts find 1 or 2 asteroid worlds and the rest are ice or fire. That means in order to expand I need to get to tech 2 in the resource tree. I play with Vasari mostly by the way. To do this I need two platforms that upgrade my resource tech tree. Thats a lot of crystal.

I think it would be better and get the ball rolling more if the fire and ice planet upgrades were tech 1. That way you save yourself an extra 100 or so crystal and can expand to those first few worlds quicker. You can also then build a weapons lab instead of the second resource lab and get some laser upgrades. Unless I'm just starting out wrong.

You can always buy crystal off the black market. Since your credits typically roll in a lot faster to start and the market hasn't been used much (if at all) you can often nab a bit of crystal for a neglible cost.

The idea is that expansion is slow, I'm playing a large random map that has three star systems in it, and I haven't left my own system in five to six hours of gameplay, I'm just slowly teching up and pushing against the three AIs stuck in here with me.

It takes a while, but getting Fire and Ice colonoisation before anyone else can help you in the early hours of the game.
