AI determing military strength

How do the AI's gather intelligence to determine your military strength?Do they have to raise the level of spying to get the specific information? Is it gathered through scout ships?Or do they automatically know when you create ships and have the inforfmation at their fingertips?
Or when your trading with them do they peek at how many ships you have? :LOL:Who would do such a thing?

No espionage needed to get a rough idea about military strength.

- The military timeline displays added attack / defense values for all known races.

- Once discovered, you can always see enemy planets, as well as ships in orbit.

- I could be wrong, but I think even the number of ships is openly available somewhere in the civ. manager or foreign relations.

However, especially the timeline can be misleading. Ships in orbit around planets with a certain building appear to be much more powerful than they really are, this gets reflected in the timeline. Ships under the influence of mil. starbases get counted with their increased values, if they leave the radius of influence, they may be less powerful.

So it is built into the game.

Yes. The graph is a convenient, if usually inaccurate, indicator of military strength. I believe it is calculated as (total attack + total defense + (total HP / 10)). The AI uses this value to tell if it's stronger than an opponent.

Obviously, this evaluation is pretty simplistic, and can make the AI think its tougher than it is. Ships in orbit are 1.5 times as powerful, meaning that they are not as effective on offense. Military starbases have a similar defense-only effect unless they are positioned offensively in another race's territory.

More importantly, weapon and defense types are not considered, and the design of opponents ships is not taken into consideration. For instance, you could have a thousand fighters with 1 beam attack, and I might only have a single dreadnaught with 30 missile attack and 50 beam defense. Your military rating would be something like 1000, while mine would be more like 90. However, in a war, I would win. Your fighters wouldn't even dent my dreadnaught, and may only make it stronger by leveling it up.
