New feature - Auto Constructing

Similar to the ability of survey ships to "auto" survey.

What about auto construct. As a constructor is launched (automatically on completion) it navigates to the nearest starbase that requires upgrading. This would be an option that can be turned on/off as needed. maybe a waypoint called "nearest starbase"?

I find it a distraction to route constructors to starbases during times of war or when there are lots created over a few turns.

thoughts?

Yes I find it a little frustrating that i have to rely on AI constructors to point the way to a recource!

Especially since that by the time you have decent sensors for exploring, all the recources are taken already!!

This would work better if you had a list of upgrades you want done to the starbase. Que up a bunch of upgrades and the constructors would go to them and upgrade it.

Yea true.

I think for a good beginning tho, you could have constructors treat recources as if they were anomalies. That way your constructors would automatically claim recources but then simply not add to the station automatically but go after the next resource.

I think it would be even better if the AI didn't treat them like anomalies. In fact, it might even be better if no one treated anomalies as such. At any case, I like the idea myself.

Full support of this idea. I hardly ever build constructors in normal games because they're just too annoying to micro around.

While we're at it, add automation to transports, freighters, spore ships...

Yea, i will often just ignore them for x number of turns, let them build up in numbers before moving them around.

What i usually do not do, is build recource starbases! well not unless their in my territory. Anyone who can build recource starbases outside their territory succesfully either has the difficulty set too low or has managed to dominate the game after a long struggle!! In either case, recource starbases are no longer needed anyway, so they are basically irrelevant except for helping metaverse score.

...are you serious? Resource starbases are incredibly useful all the time. A good economy or military resource could be the difference between victory and defeat. Just because it's in enemy territory you give up on it? Especially on the higher difficulties when the AI gets all kinds of bonuses and you don't, it'd be crazy to ignore them. What difficulties are you playing on?

Obscene.

I find the AI will put everything into taking out your recource starbases, especially if they are closer to its territory than your other assets. I have never managed to hold a recource starbase in such circumstances if i am the underdog. Even if my ships are superior, they don't offer much protection while orbiting planets as they try to repair! It is a total waste of time building it in the first place when you know the inevitable distruction is just around the corner.

I've found it's best to try and be friendly with the civ whose territory your starbase is in... and also try and keep them at war with the civs who are at war with you. They do a pretty decent job of protecting your starbases for you

This doesn't always work, of course, but I do think the bonuses you can get from the resources are worth fighting for.

well diplomacy will keep your starbases up and running but personally i am enjoying the game most when my back is against the wall. I guess it is that attitude more than anything else which makes starbases unviable for me.

Well, by all means enjoy the game as you please! I'm glad that everyone can play this game with different styles and still have a good time. Have fun, friend
