Newbie question on Colony ships

Hello GC2 fans! This is my first GC2 post (played GC1 a bit back in '03). I've found the answer to most of my questions so far by using the search feature, but I couldn't find this one.

It seems that everyone refers to colony ship capacity in 500m increments. In the two small games I've played so far, I've had standard colony ships that only let me load 250m people. Did the colony module capacity change with DA?
