Is there anyway to actually play against (or with) another person? I've been playing soley against the computer for a long time, but have never ventured onto the metaverse. I don't think there is, and see many potential problems, but is there a way?

No. The metaverse is still single-player, it just lets you submit your scores and compete indirectly based on your accumulated total.
