DOWNLOAD IDEAS FROM BRAD.

Okay, overall things are going pretty well. But I would like to propose an secondary path for people who have purchased the game directly but want to hear your views on:

Right now, you purchase the game, you get a serial number and a link to Stardock Central. You install SDCEntral, create an account and then enter in your serial number and then donwload the game.

It works pretty ewll overall but, between the occasionall technical glitch and users, in their excitement, bypassing a step it's creating a bit of a support hassle.

So here's an alternative path:

You order the game, it creates a link to download the retail level of the game. It would be one big old EXE though, few hundred megs. But this way, once you had the thing downlodaed to your drive, you'd have it.

Then at that point you could download SDCEntral and get the bonuspak at your leisure. But this way the download having to go through SDCEntral is much smaller and you have at least the 1.0 game and no matter what hapens, you wuldn't have to go through redownloading the entire thing through SDCentral, you could always just reinstall from that big file.

Let me know what you think. We can implement this quickly.

Hurley, I have emailed sales asking that you be refunded. They will refund you in the morning.

Frogboy, I have re-read my posts and apolgise for the tone.
I would like to play the game rather than a refund. As I said, I can't purchase it here and usual mail time for the CD from US is 10-14 weeks, so I would pefer to download it. My issue is that I don't see that the problems I am experiencing will be resolved as your statement was it was my connection. If you have an alternative I would be very happy to try as I have already spent many hours trying SDC and lately the full retail download. If it would be easier is there some one we can communicate away from the forum to resolve this?

Sure thing. Email me at bwardell@stardock.com. I can try to walk you through the download.

I'm getting ready to go to bed, but the retail direct link should work fine now. Our bandwidth capaicty has been increased to the point where it shouldn't be a problem to get it, even in Australia where you are! ;)

Frogboy, thank you. How you remain polite in the face of comments and angst such as mine amazes me. I will keep restarting the retail version and swap e-mails tomorrow. Agin, my apolgies. Sleep well. :)

It is awesome that I'll be playing this game in the (distant, admittedly) company of people like Hurley, who are gutsy enough and have enough character to own up like he has done when he's thought he's done something questionable. Kudos to you, Hurley, for your last message despite the very apparent frustration you've been going through.

If it is of any comfort, I've been trying to download just the core game for about the last 60 or 70 hours :notsure: . On a 56k6 modem. In New Zealand, land of the long white (lost) packet. I'm gradually succeeding :)

Frogboy, I just entered my Email addy on that page and indeed got an email, but it only contained the link to SDCentral but no link to a retail Galciv. This is probably due to my Drengin subscription rather than Galciv-only buy.
Anything I can do about that? (no hurry I managed to get the game running so it's just for my 'nice collection' to get this one too :))

BB: Yea, we don't have that yet for Drengin uesrs unfortunatley. The reason is that the retail installer doesn't recognize the Drengin serial numbers. We'll be meeting tomorrow to see what we can do about that.

My personal view is to give every Drengin uesr a GalCiv serial #. That way, even if Drengin expires, they can still get updates to GalCiv after their subscription without having to jump throgh hoops.

Ignore my email asking about the Drengin thing then. ;)

Hurley: If you're trying to get the direct download version, are you using a program that will automatically resume the download for you? 450 odd MB from the US to Oz is never gonna get here in one go. ;)
I can understand your frustration, but you can get the game via downloading it through SDC with a whole bunch of patience. And trust me, it's worth the hassle, so don't give up on it. :) I'm an Aussie as well, so I feel your pain. ;p

The whole damn thing in under 15 minutes. My thanks, Frogboy, to you and anyone/everyone else involved in getting that file up there, and my apologies for my earlier pestering. The speed of that DL more than made up for the wait.

I hope you'll consider making future updates available this way, as well. For me, at least, this was much, much easier. :)

As someone who bought it from Drengin.net I'd like the "offical" GalCiv serial number too :)
