DL vs DA

My computer sucks with DA, but flies as softly as a cloud with DL

Let me just start by saying: My computer is average. I meets the recommended areas for Galciv2. It has doesn't have a gig of ram(yet), it has 512. In Galciv2 I like to play in gigantic galaxies. It offeers more room for tactics and strategies. I like to play wth nine races with a high difficulty and lots of planets and stars. DL ran fine with these options selected. DA however, sucks with my computer. I can't even run three opponents on a large galaxy without it crashing. I even put DA in window mode. That hardly helped. On the odd occasion I was able to get to the process tree and finish it off with my good friend ctrl+alt+delete.

Step by step this happens: 1)I set up my gigantic galaxy with three opponents 2)Start the galaxy 3) After 15 minutes, I get the screen saying the humans invented hyperdrive 4) I click done and I am brought to the research screen half a minute later with tons of sound skippings 5) I am finally brought to the research screen I pick a tech and push done. 5) Usually where DA crashes but may get to the next step 6) Manage to get to the game screen click on ship. Lags 7) Manage to contain frustration and hit turn 8) Where the game endes. If I had the patients of god I might be able to go on, but I don't. 9) Can't manage to get to windows, lagging sounds is gratting on my mind. 10)Push power button. I get some satisfaction and I don't know where that satisfaction came from exactly.

The DA beta ran much much much smoother than the recent patches. The first just slightly hindered my computer's performance, but the recent one...well that just put the nail in this cpu's coffin. I'm sure I am sounding like a biggot ragging on stardock, but I am not. They made DL and that game was nearly perfect in performance. DA just sucks with my computer. I can't even manage to get a debug because I have to shut it down befor it can document what happened. Let me say again that I am not ragging on stardock, I like the ideas they put in DA just for some reason the performance has gone down the toilet. I probably made some people angry with this post, so do as you see fit.

The debug.err is created every time you start the game. Even if you only get as far as the title screen, a new debug.err is created.

I am pretty disappointed as well. DL ran great, no real issues. DA, jerking, skipping, jumping, click, click, clicking in the background. I love all the new features but Stardock raced this one out to get the cash flow in. Oh well.

It is odd that stardock would rush DA. Now I remember why they had DA come out a couple of days early.

JubJub15, at the very least you should update the video and audio drivers.
Increasing your swap file to at least 2GB is also a good idea.

I thought I did. Maximum size for virtual memory is: 20000mb. It must not be in this debug. I just recently updated my video drivers. I guess I could do the same for audio, but I doubt that will change how the performance runs.

I couldn't find any updates for the Sound Blaster Live!.

It is better to set a static swap file. You would do that by setting both minimum and maximum sizes to the same value. 2048/2048 would make a 2GB swap file.

Soundblaster.com has drivers dated 2003, here is a link:

The second driver package (Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) (23.32 MB)) is probably the one you should use. It is a complete install with updated core applications.

Okay, here goes nothing...

Okay, THAT was not fun. About 15 minutes of my life gone. Nothing changed,thanks any way Moosetek13. I think I'll stick to other games until DA is improved or I upgrade my computer.

Alright, give me some suggestions for a good ram stick and a graphics card...and I'll consider it. It just baffles me that DL runs better than DA. *sigh*

The graphics card would depend on your budget.

The ram would depend on your motherboard.

If you have the mb manual it will show what kind of memory you need, how much ram your mb supports, etc.
You should first open it up and see how many ram slots are still open. If that 512MB is taking all the slots you will have to pull some out to add more.

Where is the mb manual you speak of? I forgot what my motherboard was called. I assume I can find that in the control panel, but I don't know where.

Al right I doon't know if this answers it, but I'll try anyway:

AMD Athlon 64 Processor
2800+
1.80 GHz, 512mb or RAM
Physical Address Extension

On ram, I think all of the sticks add up to get 512.

The manual would be where you left it, if you ever had one.
If it is a canned computer, like a Gateway or Dell or something, you should be able to look up the info on their website.

If is was a custom build, there should be a mb manual with the other documentation.

If that doesn't help, you can look for the brand and model # on the board itself, then download the manual from the manufacturers site.

And yes, I know that all of the sticks add up to 512. But, how many sticks are there installed and are there any open ram slots to add more? You will have to open the case and look to find out.

Drats, I think it's three that add up. My computer is a microsoft XP Home edition. To be honest, I have sort of a "Frenkenputer" it's made up of several different parts form different computers. Please be patient with me. I'm pretty blunt when it comes to the the technical aspects of a computer.

Your operating system is XP, but that is not what the computer is.

If you don't know how to work on computers, it might be better to bring it in to a shop and have a tech look at it. Messing around with what you don't understand is a good way to fry something.

My computer is pretty close to yours, but with a gig of ram and a Geforce 6600gt (AGP) instead, and I'm having massive slowdown problems, but at least no crashes. After a few turns, scrolling around the galaxy goes from frames per second to seconds per frame. I've updated every driver and fiddles with every setting, but no good. Its playable when I zoom out to the strateigic view, but still not great.

My computer runs Oblivion and Medieval 2 (neither on full, of course, but they both run smoothly), but gets horribly choppy in Dark Avatar. So, don't count on a gig of ram to necessarily solve the problem.

My debug file... or at least some of it. (yeah, I know the swap file could be larger... I let the computer auto assign it this time I played... and yes, I know its not an official NVidia Driver, but the results are the same with the official one.)

Probably right, I should get my computer teacher to look at it. Any file somewhere that tells you everything your computer has? Something like a text document?

Under Start Menu\Accessories\System Tools\System information if you are running XP.

And XP itself does not really run well unless you have minimum 1GB RAM. Not metioning games or other apps. Especially true for the 64 bit version. I'd recommend at least 2GB for optimal performance.

The Radeon 9200 is an obsolete card for modern gaming...don't expect wonders from it. It neets the sppecs, but is behind in technology. At least upgrade to a 9500+ ATI card - 9500-9700 are older, but much improved. The 9800+ series is even better.

Can't speak to NVIDIA these days...I have come to prefer ATI in the last few years - just a personal pref - like the Omega Control suite for them.

huh, and I'm running on 512... It just makes you think, all this stuff used to be cutting edge. WHat kind of ram would you suggest?

Depends on what your MB can handle. Spend the few extra bucks to get good quality RAM sticks though ...don't be fooled by the cheapest price. Gold, not silver contacts are the easiest way to tell, though not all gold sticks are top quality.

Google is your friend - research the manufacturer/type of stick before you buy it.

It's odd though, my computer is suppose to fit the reccomended stats. I guess stardock doesn't want to intimidate poeple with:" 1 gig of Ram required" on the bottom of the box.
