That was before AH bought out SSI, though I could still be wrong as to the company, since it is a long time ago. I do remember that the main reason that any of us joined the debate club was that it would mean 5-6 trips a year out of the little town I grew up in, and at least 3 of those trips would be into Reno, someplace within walking or cabbing distance of Uncle Harry's, which at the time mostly carried SSI, so that's most of what we bought.

Given my nickname, I don't think anyone would want me on their team I can say that now, when I was young that bothered me, but now I just accept the fact that I'm not a hypercompetitive warmonger, and that's what it takes to be competitive online. Heck, the last time they asked me if I wanted to join the office fantasy football league, I asked if there was any prize for team with the most jail time served.

Then again, I did win the last AoE/RoR "lan test" our office had. That was more the fact that I had a different AoE/RoR strategy that focused on Egyptian Scythe Chariots and Priests. In this game, the gold supplies were quickly exausted, so everyone else suddenly had nothing better than scouts while I was still cranking out those nasty Egyptian scythe chariots (my unsupervised priests having had an unfortunate encounter with a heavy catapult).

To all who fondly remember S&T Magazine:

To show you how old I am; I took them up on their lifetime subscription offer. A few years later they had to sell out and I died. Well the new owners didn't honour the subscription deal.

I was bord one day and had some money burning a hole in my pocket. A friend had to make a quick trip to N,Y, city (from here in Montreal) so I decided to go and try to take a tour of the S&T Magazine ofices.

I was only in N.Y. for a couple of hours (the whole time at S&T) but it was then that I bought the subscription and about 4-5 of their boxed (well enveloped actually) games.

The mention of A&H's Blitzkrieg reminded me of all this. (loved that game)

S&T had a similar idea but I forget what it was called; War Game Designer Workshop or something. Anyway you got 3 huge double sided maps that could be put together to make any kind of situation you could imagine, and it came with a bazillion units in 6 different colours.

When I left they said that even though they were really a mail order only buisness that I could take the games with me as I paid already. All the way back home I was reading the tons and tons of modular rules and charts. Was home before I knew it.

PS. About 6 weeks later they sent me my whole order again. I guess it just got processed as usual. My friend and I had huge battles set up on identical maps, each at our own houses, where we could survey the battleground at our leisure. It was way before computers and modems. Sort of play by phone. Life was grand

I'll join a team with you. I used to be a competative sob and was pretty good at it. Lately I am way less competative but the old habits do die hard. Would love to team up with another just not ruthless anymore kind of player. Heh Elrikk, since we're telling old stories, I'll mention one.

Me and my best friend, who I introduced to wargaming, went on a junior high school band tour in '76. One stop we made was in Washington D.C. Now, I said we are best friends but we didn't really know that yet and we were both very competative sob's.

While I was in the smithsonian I found a small store there that sold AH games. They had Starship troopers there and it was a new game. I was so happy to buy it because it was new and also because I could one up my friend.

Imagine my surprise when he showed up holding the exact same game. Hehe. It was a fun game though and mapping your tunnel complex was one of wargamings better kept fun secrets. I only wish the new movie and game had half as much fun as that AH classic.

47. My next door neighbors moved when I was 6. Their oldest son gave me his battered copies of AH's Gettysburg & Midway. Neither had rules - so I wrote some myself and played them with my friends. Been gaming ever since. Hassled my Dad into buying me a subscription to a small, offset-printed miniatures mag put out by Chris Wagner called S&T which I saw at the local model shop. Castle Bodenstedt fell many times! Used my summer job money to subscribe to 4 small lithographs called Kampf, put out by some equa-nerd to me named Jim Dunnigan. Eagerly cut-and-pasted Crete & BMS to play at the HS chess club. Played 1914, Jutland until they fell apart. Bought everything Poultron Press did in the TSG. Read Game Theory. Made SGrad II. Bought the monsters: WIEast, WIP, WIEur, WBTS, Obj:Mos, TSS. Kept an eye out for Gary and Dave at TSR with Chainmail. Then came D&D and John Hill's Squad Leader. Ran across Kevin at OSG, too. Vet at 3R, Luftwaffe, PzBlitz & LaBataille. Then came girlfriend and career.

And even with all that, things are even better today: P4 2.2GHz, Sony 21" F520, Klipsch with Zwan and Syd Barrett Gotta love life!
