I purchased Galciv online on 16 apr via stardock. I am having ongoing difficulties downloading the game - it fails with a message file ...... failed wrong size - it struck out on weapons.db_ a number of times - it has now has completed it that one and is striking out on Menu_Starbase.bi_ . When not using stardock I get "connection with server was reset". Can anyone help

In posts 1&2 of this thread, there was mention of a pdf copy of the manual. I bought the download version of the game and cannot find this. I do have a gc_quickguide.html file that talks you through your initial game. Is this what was meant by the manual? If not, any tips on where to find it?

jondo, click on the "software" button in Stardock (the program you're using to post here) and then click on "Drengin.net" and you'll see everything you could want to download for GalCiv.

JukeI3ug, I'd guess 2 factors. 1 if Stardock make it too cheap to buy their games direct from them then they stand less chance of getting reasonable penetration into the big stores (see some posts Brads made about re-stocking policy in stores etc) for this and future games. Remember they seem like nice guys but they still need to eat. 2 - they had to spend quite a bit on servers and bandwidth to make downloads of that size workable for a sufficient number of people (see early threads on release day). I use Object Desktop and there's an order of magnitude difference in the download sizes between that at GC.

I purchased through download and had the stuff mailed. It worked perfectly. I didn't do it specifically to show support for this, I did it because it was EASY!

Can someone that know this, write a walkthrough on exactly how I can backup my game to a CD from download only option. I did everyting, but when I do restore archive, and select the 85.99 Mb gamefile, all good, but nothing happens! Try again and it saz it is allredy qued for installation, but where is the que?

Frogboy, it it possible to create a backup CD that lets you install the game on a computer without internet support. Like the CD you get retail???

Could you give mor detail about the archiving? I've just downloaded the game and multimedia etc, if I want to back them up on a CD do I have to download them again? Also there doesn't seem to be a download and archive option for the multimedia files?

One last question how do I change the default install directory if I download through SDC?

May be a bit offtopic,but here's another thing I like about Stardock Central:



When installing galciv from CD - you need admin rights on the computer. Every time you download and install a new patch - admin login required. But I'm playing on a computer at the office ('cause it's faster then my old computer at home) on which I don't have admin rights.

So first I had to ran to our overworked admin everytime a new patch was released and do the "Please, I have an important problem... uhm..."-thing.



Then I found out that using SDC, I can install everything with my own login, without having admin rights. And I like that.

I also want to chime in and say that this s/w distribution method ROCKS. I travel VERY frequently on business, and it is sometimes a real hassle to get to the store and get a game, etc. The ability to d/l it over a high speed cxn is amazing.

Heck, I liked it so much that I got the whole shebang (not just GalCiv) at once. Installed it on my laptop and way cool, done. Spent half the night playing GalCiv.

PS I'm really glad to be handing you, not some retail store, the lion's share of the money for the game.

Well still they get ALOT more profit I bet by us buying direct. They should be willing to share some of those savings with us instead of charging us more then it costs in retail. Bandwidth can cost but not as much as the manuals boxs distributor and retail cuts of profits from there bottom line.

Anyways if bandwidth cost then they shouldnt charge $5&h to send the cd directly. Especially considering its really not that expensive to send a CD. There light weight and can be sent by US mail for regular postage. Consider all the CD's AOL sends out. If it cost them $5 to send each CD they would never do it.

The UK legal definition of value is basically that the value of something is what people are prepared to pay for it. If you don't think it's worth it don't pay it.
I wouldn't be surprised if their contract with their publisher had a clause about stardock not undercutting them
Anyway AOL will write off the cost of their CDs against their advertising budget. Doesn't the US have some massive discount for junk mail?

A word of warning for people buying from Britain.... DONT BUY THE CD!!!!!. Basically, Stardock put the full price of the Game (even though I'd already downloaded it) on the front of the CD and Customs got me for £10.00 (US $16.00) Ouch...

how can i redownload Galciv when I have changed computer, and no longer have that email with my serial nr??

You don't need to download old patches of anything to do with the game. The newest patches have all the stuff from the older patches in them. So you shouldn't need .001-.003

Why the talk about an extra $5 for the CD? Looks like the same price to me. (unless it is added past the initial choice screen.)

I would like nothing more than to see SD get the lions share of the profits, but this game can readily be bought elseware for around $30-$35. That is one of the reasons I hesitate on buying directly from companies. Even though the market drops (considering time passed since release) everywhere else, they tend to remain at "new release" prices. IMO, this costs them direct sales. I understand there may be contractual obligations to not undercut the stores, but this should diminish over time. maybe a new contract lawyer is in order. lol, lord knows there are enough of them.

Now for the Co-Cheeze part:

I think it is FANTASTIC that SD is making the expansion pack free. I feel this is the way it should be. But I do understand the cost associated with making one. My idea to SD, is still keep it free for the skin-flints out there, but provide a link (IE:PayPal) for players who wish to make a donation to the effort, can. If it works out good, it may change the face of the gaming industry.

Through wanting to have a player base that trusts a company (good support, patches, free expansion packs).... Show a little trust in the players as well. Give us an option to donate for the expansion. You might be (pleasantly) supprized. Sure, there will be a lot that don't coffer up for a freebie, but I bet there are a number of players that would. (maybe just in time for the official release (non-beta) of the free X)

The extra $5.00 is shipping and probably gets added later.

I guess the reason for the $44.95 is to encourage purchase of dregin.net - after all it's only $25 more (psychological impact....). That's what I'll be after...

p.s do the "remembered" downloads only apply with retail versionbs?
