Sensors Question

Hey there,

If I give myself a Sensors boost in the Racial abilities, will that increase the sensor range of Ships, Bases even without putting sensor tech on them? Will it increase the sensor range of ships?

Also - If I am customizing my opponents and I give them a Sensor Racial ability, will it react to threats in this increased sensor range?

I wouldn't spend the points there, if I were you. There is a cap on sensor range, which can easily be reached or exceeded without any racial bonuses. Spend your points on something more useful to you.

I find the AI reacts to what ever it sees. For example, I play in a galaxy of bright AI and occationally loose the race to build the eyes of the universe. I never am able to sneak up on their bases or fleets without having my ships be intercepted. I'm pretty sure the AI gets to actually use the senor bonuses you give them.

I agree with Mistralok, It's better to put points towards something more useful. If you're worried about sensors focus on getting the Eyes of the Universe wonder and then you'll +15 on all bases and ships.

I disagree. For combat ships, you often don't have the room for significant sensor groups, and the sensor ability allows them to operate effectively WITHOUT needing a spotter of some kind.

In Dark Avatar, it's really useful if you have the first strike ability.

I'm not sure the AI would make use of sensor abilities? Dousn't the AI see all anyway? but is in some way programmed to pretend that it does not?

No, though on the highest difficulties it gets a huge sensor ability bonus so at that point it effectively does. Frogboy has commented that it's not even clear if there is such a thing as Fog of War as far as the Ai is concerned at the top levels. At the Intelligent level and lower though, the AI doesn't see any farther than you do (unless it has a racial sensor bonus or the Eyes).

Thanks for that Kryo, yea i usually play on 'crippling'.

it is hard to guess what the AI is really seeing since it won't necissarily respond to somthing as soon as it sees it. Otherwise you could see some kind of pattern..."ah that ship got attacked as soon as it reached that point on the map, therefore the AI can see up to that point etc etc". However the AI just dousn't seem to work that way.
