Recycling ships

I wondered a thing..

what happens to a ship when you de-commission it?

I mean, in theory, you're tearing it appart, and sell the components for $$. However, I wondered if we could instead sell it to the open market?

Your ship disappear, and you get more $ out of it. However, anyone who puts the money can buy it.

Even pirates.. they could simply use the outdated ships of most players to harass starbases and trade routes.

It would give a new scope to "arm runner". People who focus on production could sell at profit their ships (because, let's face it, AI gives crappy price for ships. At least in the games I played), while someone with a huge economy could buy an army.. an outdated army, but still an army..

How much would you pay for a Sherman tank, or a P-51 Mustang? OK. Now, what if that Sherman had to go up against an Abrams? Or that Mustang against an F-16? Pretty worthless; and the game prices reflect this. I must admit that I have never tried to sell one of my top of the line ships to the AI. If you would like to get more real value from your outdated ships, there is a strategy wherein you gift/sell your older, high maintenance ships to the AI, in order to wreck it's economy. A number of posts on the forum say that this seems to work well.

They probably would go for much more than what they were built for now days.

Herein lies the problem. The AI is not looking for museum relics or nostalgia. They will not purchase an older rust bucket for much cash or for any cash at all.

However, there should be a button to refuse a gift and the AI should learn how to use it.

When I decommission a ship, I don't look at it quite like you do sir. I agree that we tear the ship apart but we use most of the useful materials in the construction of other ships while we sell most of the out dated tech. That is why the money we receive in return is chump change.

Just my thoughts.

Well, if they have to face your own Abrams, you are right.

However, if their ennemies still is in the Panzer Age...

and I do know that some civilians would love to get their hands on a Sherman

In this game, it is very possible to become and arms dealer! I would warn you though, develop the ships with guns and protection that you have counters to. (ie if you have armor, install guns; if youre using lazers put on armor) Basically you want to be able to defeat the ships you sold with out much trouble. Theres nothing worse than staring down the barrel of a gun you just sold someone.

Oh, and yes, you will never make money doing, but it is a good way to influence the AI to attack othres and engineer your own wars between the AIs!

I'm with you, Q. The AI should definitely be able to 'just say no'. As a sidenote; In games past, races sympathetic to my cause have gifted me with ships- which I readily accepted. It has been awhile, so I honestly can't remember whether I had the option to refuse.

"There's a wonderful story of the God who is walking down the road wearing a hat that is coloured red on one side and blue on the other side. When the farmers in the field go into the village in the evening, they say, "Did you see that god with the blue hat?" And the others say, "No, no, he had a red hat on." And they get into a fight. He makes it even worse by first walking in one direction and then turning around and turning his hat around, too, so that again it will be red or blue. Then when these two chaps get into a fight and are brought before the king for judgment, this trickster god appears, and he says, "It's my fault, I did it, and I meant to do it. Spreading strife is my greatest joy." Joseph Campbell, 'The Power of Myth' speaking to Bill Moyers

Yes. You can refuse but the AI can't.

Why decommission though. Build a newer model on the same hull size the upgrade the old design to the new. Much cheaper/quicker than building/buying the new outright.

Myself included. It would certainly make that commute more fun! 'And she'll have fun, fun, fun, 'til her Daddy takes her Panzer away'.

It has already been concluded that the problem is not that the AI accepts the gifts,,but that it's unable to get rid of obsolete ships burdening the economy with absurd maintence.

You are absolutely right about this, FC. Upgrading is the most economical strategy. Darn it, though, I just never have enough money in the bank to upgrade when I really need to.

Unless you have the funds to do so and wish to avoid the 20K penalty, true?

True. I usually buy the new while upgrading the old at the same time as economy allows. I do have one ship that costs right at 20K so I know I can always buy that to avoid the penality.

Ew upgrading...

I almost never upgrade, it's usually way too expensive of a process as a whole. Maybe that's because I build ships in mass quantities, and refuse to spend the time upgrading ships individually.

Gifting exploit ftw

Veteran ships are worth upgrading...the rest is either scrapped or gifted away
