You don't see these to often. I took these snapshots of a solar halo taken on May 12, 2006 at about 1:00pm from Santa Rosa, CA. Thought I would share. Enjoy!

These halos are more commonly known as 'sun-dogs.'


Halos and sun-dogs a re actually different. Sun-dogs appear as bright spots of light to the kleft and right of the sun, at an angle of 22 degrees or more. Halos appear as arches or arcs around the sun or moon, some containing sundogs, and the light can be refracted into the colors of the rainbow (unlike sundogs).

I've seen them around the moon, too. They're just as beautiful but it doesnt fry your eyeballs to admire them, lol.


Ive seen halos around the moon far more often than around the sun. This is possible because as you say, you need to look in the general direction of the sun.
