Pirates

A suggestion

I'd like to see a more persistent pirate element added to/modded into the game. Some of the most memorable battles I've had have been against pirates. There should always be the chance a merchie will be attacked by piratical elements. The further away from a planet, starbase, freindly warship, or naval facility the merchie is; the more of a chance of piracy there should be.

I agree. I do not see them nearly often enough. It would be nice to have some control over how often they appear.

Hmm...maybe they could even be added as another "race". That might be interesting to see who would try to keep the peace with you and who wouldn't. All the government stuff might be hard to pull off, but I'm sure there are piratical races in some universe somewhere.

And maybe you could pay them to attack specific people. Mercenaries anyone?

It would be pretty cool to have races that drift in and out of the galaxy to make the game more interesting. But I rarely have to fight pirates because I don't usually get the galactic prison.

Is piracy tied to the prison?

I was under the impression that the prison riots were triggered by that event.

Sometimes pirates appear around the galaxy in general. One time, I had basically won a game and was just mopping up, and some pirates appeared.
But they appeared in the most ridiculously powerful ships you would not believe. They were far superior to anything I could ever produce (as I had the best laser attack and defence techs in the game already). Luckily, pirates hang around in the part of the galaxy where they appear, but I still had to send a couple of my most powerful fleets to deal with them.
I guess pirates are coded to have a strength relative to the strength of other races in the galaxy, but this particular time it was a bit silly to have some pirates turn up in super high-tech ships better than anything a galactic empire could muster. I guess they must have been pirates from another dimension or something...

I honstly wouldn't mind something of the sort of Barbarians in Civ. A random 'race' that seems to have no home. (But may OCCASIONALLY have colonized worlds every now and then, or stations, as 'Pirate Ports') and occasionally attacks your ships and trading routes, builds fleets, retreats, tries to increase power solely by attacking and stealing things rather than the traditional government way.

That being said, it'd probably take alot of coding, and I'm sure Stardock has alot to do. Maybe for the next expansion?

Piracy on the high seas would be a good source for some behavior ideas, though, space is basically like a sea, same with a colonial rush from big empires to new areas, I could really see piracy taking off, privateers hired to atttack other nations, rogues, etc. IT sounds like it'd be awesome.

Man...now I'm jazzed...I want pirates in the next expansion (After Dark Avatar) Pirate bases, pirate ports, mercenaries, information brokers, and ship-jacking.

Ah...but I don't think I'll get it, as cool as it might be.

I beleive hearing that Tactical Combat might be in the next expansion after Dark Avatar. Perhaps if Tactical combat could allow for ship disabling, jacking, and stealing, it could be a back door for some scurvy space pirates with their own pirated fleets?

Food for thought.

i good race for this would be the ones from independence day and they would attack planets leaving them as a 1 or 0

Whatever you hear is outright wrong. TC will never, EVER be in galciv2, although it looks like favourite for "new option in gc3".

The AI would need substatial reworking to make TC work well.

Also, I vote more pirates, since I like crushing them

You know the Korx are a lot like pirates as they are pretty much the galactic mafia maybe they could have more of a mafia like instinct, another civ could hire them to raid another civ's trade ships, or could hire them to give them intel ( like espoinage but the target civ won't know who's really doing it), and the victim would have to put money into espoinage to find out who's the guy paying the Korx. Also it seems odd that the Korx, who are practily the mafia would be in the UP, maybe there could be some criminal opposite to that.

The Korx are dorx. They are just about the easiest race to wipe out.

When star empires surrender, IMO, their ships should turn pirate and try retaking some of their old base worlds- or some formerly uninhabited planet/system...
