You set up trade routes by researching trade and then building a freighter.  You send the freighter to an alien world, and the route is created between the planet the freighter was built on and the alien world.

Trade routes with the aliens will make them like you, and if your relations get to close and you have the Alliance tech, you will be able to ally with them.

Periodic gifts of money (700+ bc) will also make the AI like you, but bribes only get you as high as Friendly.

If you give the AI enough stuff, you can ask them to attack other civs they are not friendly with. You can also try to get warring civilizations to make peace.
