Possible to empty a colony ship?

When the initial planet grabbing phase is over, I often have a few surplus colony ships. I have found no way to offload the colonists on already settled planets...so the colonists are stuck on trhe ships, i.e. they are lost to me.

Have I overlooked something?

All but 1 can be unloaded. Go to the nearest planet, launch the ship by moving the slider to 0, then click on the arrow to set it at 1.

Another way to do it is to park your excess colony ship(s) on a planet then go to the Shipyard and obsolete your colony ship designs. You can then decommision them all... obsoleting the design is the only way I know of to decomission a ship in orbit.

You can also be realy sneaky and just give 'em all to another faction like I did. Or you can just upgrade them to transports/freighters.

Can't your upgrade them to Troop Transports off planet too? I'm pretty sure you can, and they'll keep the same amount of Colonists...

Lol, just saw the above post

I use them to transport at the beginning. Load them up at your biggest colony then send them to a planet with almost noone on it and then send them out with 1 unit and back and forth. Later I upgrade them to transports and do the same thing unless I need the people to land on an enemy.

A good use for extra colony ships is to upgrade to constructors. Move them where they need to go and then upgrade to the cheapest constructor (no engines just the module) for about 200 bc. A player can also upgrade them to freighters, though off hand, I don't know what that costs, probably about the same.

Do unload the people first, because more people means more money. Planets with less than 1 billion do not get the full pop growth so look to unload them there.

A fast colony ship can also be used to shuttle population between planets to balance growth.
