With proposed combat changes for 1.2, how will anyone defeat the Dreadlords?

It says that in version 1.2, the defender will get to fire back, even if killed during that combat round. If this is true, how will nayone defeat the DreadLords ships? The only way I was able to do it in the first place was to create ships with enough offense to kill them in the initial strike. Otherwise, you would lose at least a ship in every battle, since the Dreadlord ships vaporize your ships with a single attack.

hehehe.... Just build a whole lot of them.....

But look at it this way, at least your planet defenders will be able to get in a shot now.

I wonder if that'll apply to starbases too? I can't stand that they can kill a fully armed military base in one shot.

In a way, this is actually helpful for inexperienced players, because it means that even if the DL's attack first on non-fleeted ships, the players will have a chance of doing some return damage that can add up.

I don't understand why starbases don't have attack capability, period. I should be able to select a starbase and fire a salvo at anything in range.

Err... no. One parsec is too far to shoot, because they would have got out of the way.

Wrong, this was the original way of doing it. And being the attacker gives a huge advantage, so fast powerful ships were best. I've always built heavy defence ships, and now am on even ground with people who go for huge attack.

First time I've heard somebody complain about a fast reaction to a problem by a dev... oh well.

You can't please everyone...

Cause its lame. Its a Bandaid fix. Until they come up with a REAL fix, this won't cut it. All it will do now is get the people that are making Attack only ships to add Defenses to There ships.

We need a Real System that will decide who shoots first by some sort of initiative system.

Oh yea! the AI fired on me. Right before they died. Yippeeeeee. Why not just say everyone fires at the same time? Thats all this really is.

The one who attacks takes the initiative, duh.

And it is not everyone firing at the same time, either. The attacker still gets the first shot, just not the last shot. The defender gets in the last shot with the new system, instead of potentially no shot at all.

For me it will be a welcome change. I was upset because the versions that had it would crash on my system for some reason, so I never got to try it out.

I'd be all for different weapons having different attack initiative speeds, but it seems like a complicated change at this point in the game. I still think fighitng the dreadlords with this change will be suicidal, they produce such a ridiculous number of ships, you can't afford to lose an extra ship per battle against them. I think that there should still be situations were the defending player does not get to fire back.

Considering that they can shoot back now, I hope they'll change the DL back to the way they were in 1.0. IE, only one of those hell weapons per ship.

As for the update, I think there still oughta be an advantage of some sort to shooting first. You're getting the element of surprise on them. Maybe the first shot should be at max attack strength without a roll or something.

even something simple like "fastest ship" has the initiative... this is how the board game starfleet battles played it out... but anyway, if you have the faster ship, and you get attacked, you get a chance to get the first shots off... this was because "you had the better ship to manuver, position, and fire."

Sure, attacking would give you some sort of bonus, like +5 to speed for the purpose of getting initiative, smaller ship size or sensor range could help as well...

Well since DL kill one ship per shot anyway, you just need to make swarm of smaller ships without defenses.
So they will take out one, but you'll take out one of thier ships too.
