1.2 Idea - Flagships

Just been thinking about some ideas for the 1.2 of Gal Civ and this one wouldn't go away Whenever I've built up a fleet, I have one ship given the best of everything and constantly upgraded. Thats my flagship. But how about we have assignable flagships? Almost every navy through the ages has had a definable flagship - at present, the US has a flagship in every major Ocean (Pacific, Atlantic, etc.), the British have the Arc Royal, the French have the Charles de Gaulle, and so on.

In game, these ships could have some kind of small combat bonus (like +10% hitpoints), but also a moral bonus to their civilization. A hitpoint bonus would be useful in keeping it alive (because taking your enemies flagship would be seen as a major victory), and a moral bonus would be reflecting how great it is for that Empire to have such a great ship. A better explanation of the moral boost would be to use the example of the H.M.S. Hood. It's destruction at the Battle of the Denmark Strait was a great loss for the British and a huge moral blow for the country.

So, any ideas on how possible this would be? Or even any different bonus' such a ship should get?

I personally like that idea - especially because the initial "flagship" hardly fulfills that description. When I am talking about the flagship of an intergalactic war fleet, I most likely mean the biggest, meanest, most powerful dreadnaught available (like the Executor in Star Wars, for example, or the Sovereign-Class Federation Flagship in Star Trek, or the Whitestar/Excalibur in B5, the Vesuvius and Midway in Wing Commander and so on), nut a puny little research vessel that is on a "order and forget" mission to "explore the universe".
Perhaps Flagship Bonuses for an assignable FS would be good.

Your flagship (a.k.a. survey ship) will occasionally explore anomalies that give it some sort of bonus. If you upgrade it later to carry weapons, it can be a true flagship for your fleet.

You're right No118, but that only seems to work in the largest maps. For smaller games with fewer anomalies, the flagship's practically useless. Besides that, in real life, flag ships are built tough, not shaped by what they discover.

I was thinking that the game needs flagships as well.

It's not just Sci-Fi shows--it's a staple of games as well. What's that one, where humanity's cut off from Earth and looking to get back while engaged in a war with bug-like aliens? Anyway, during one of the better missions the human flagship shows up--kicks ass--it's a great moment. That's what this game needs: one ship out of the entire fleet that is the absolute best and greatest the race can produce.

How to put it into the game? Dunno, I'm not a game creator, but it seems to be a bit of a 'super project' to me. Maybe one planet could build a 'flagship' tile and that planet's stardock would then be the only one capable of producing a flagship--and upgrading it. (Or maybe calculating distance from that planet to determine upgrade time.) And the flagship would be--what? Maybe one hull size larger than your best research capacity? Gain a miniaturization bonus? A bonus to speed or experience?

I also like this idea. I missed this feature from GalCiv I of having that survey ship be able to mess things up later.

I also think this might be a good compromise with everyone who wants "heros" and such. GalCiv II isn't a game of personell: it's a game of Spaceships.

An easy feature I would like (and a must for multiplayer if there is one) is no flagship at the start of game. Also if there is a multiplayer, no starting colony ship, and a different starting amount of money, perhaps even a handicapped start with better players getting less money (eg player ratings could be expressed as a handicap based on starting money).

You mean Freespace 2? The Colossus? Heck yeah, I'm al for this! I normally even use Flagships myself, a Huge hull slightly different than the standard huge ship of the fleet, and there's only one of them.
What a Flagship should have:
Morale and/or Loyalty +10% for the entire civilization
The fleet the Flagship is in should have a +20% bonus to defense(good), weapons(evil) or +10% both(neutral)
It should have 20% more space than the traditional Huge hull, and the same number of HP more
The base Flagship hull should be atleast 50% more expensive than a Huge hull
Flagships should earn experience at an accelerated rate, atleast 50% faster than a standard vessel
The construction of a Flagship is an immense undertaking. Bla bla bla, it should be shown in a Super Project window if a race has built one.
