Modding OUT visible map items?

Specifically, I'd like to know if it's possible to change the fact that you can see your opponents starting locations right off the bat when you start a game. Ideally, I'd like to change it to unknown until discovered or until you meet the race (ala MOO2).

This feature's available right now in the 1.1 Beta, and will be included in the official patch. No mod required.

It was always available in 1.0. In the mini-map, there are a whole bunch of icons to put in things you can see and not see on the minimap. One of them is the colors of the races of the territories they own. This was initially off for me, and so I had no idea where any of the races were.
