1.1 Beta 2a Crash

I usually play GC2 in windowed mode, the other day I had to reduce my desktop size for some testing, when I played GC2 it launched the game in full screen mode, but didn't crash. Desktop now back to normal, launched GC2 and I launches a window, I can click on 'Start Game' or 'Update' etc, but once I start the game I get a black window, non-responsive.

Oh, forgot to mention, I had SmartException running but it didn't generate a crash report. The game doesn't appear to "crash" in the traditional meaning, instead it's not drawing the screen properly so I have to close the program myself.

You can manually edit your fullscreen/window settings, and resolution in your prefs.ini file. It is found in the mygames/galciv2 folder. Not 100% on that for windows 2000.

Same type of crash, attached id debug. I think the problem is that I was running the windowblinds desktop of the GalCIv2 theme. After I loaded up todays beta 110b2010 beta I could get Galciv2 to run. The opening scenes loaded very slowly and wass poor resolution, after i hit escape after a very long wait the oppening screen came up but ws very sluggish and jerky t mouse movements. After I restored the windows desktops the problems vanished.

OOps the new update had a problem with the Galciv 2 theme??? I am running a 1280 x 1024 destop.

i am also running smartexception without a report generated.

By the way, how exactly do I launch in full screen mode??

and can I use my monitor tilted in a 90 swivel mode or ue multiple monitors (I use two monitors on an extended XP desktop now)
Found the prefs.ini and have tried changing settings including fullscreen = 0 // fullscreen = 1 and I still get the same. I'll try changing some other settings and see if I can't nudge it along.

Hrm, this is suspicious.

Debug Message: InitializeDirect3D Failed.
Debug Message: Now windowed.
Debug Message: Shell initialization complete
Debug Message: WM_CLOSE message received.
Debug Message: GameUninitialize start

So I ran dxdiag and when I run the Test Direct3D I'm now getting errors.

DirectX files corrupted? Will try uninstalling and re-installing.

Bingo, reinstalling DirectX fixed things, game launched in full screen mode, went to options, changed to windowed mode, game running fine now.

In un-related news, silly windows "genuine windows" check when trying to download direct X. When I got my software license it never said I was required to jump throuh a hoop to get a patch and I've never been presented with a contract to change the license agreement, therefore their requirements to check for genuine software are invalid. Too bad I can't prove damages or I'd bring suit against them myself.

Glad to see you got it fixed.

Strange error, DirectX shouldn't simply send a "WM_CLOSE" message but an error if there is one. Bizzare...
Yay. Debug reports with updated drivers! Things are looking up.
Sigh.

Downloaded letest beta and exact same thing happened again. I'm in #galciv talking to Cari and Greenreaper, see if they can figure out why it keeps happeneing.

interesting, for me, the problem with beta 2 is the game will crush when I build my first starbase, and also when my economic temporary go negative, once it reach zero mark or lower, it crashed, so I decide to go back to 1.0x.
