Orbitals

New design category

Just a thought.

I know you can build ships with no engines and just fill them up with guns (the defenders that the AI always builds).

I think it would be nice to have a category of 'ships' that you could build to defend planets - from small laser satellites to massive military installations. These ships would be orbitals (like in MOO3), have no ability to move but instead have more space than ships of an equivalent size.

There could also be special orbital modules . . eg: a hyperspace/jump/warp gate/wormhole thingy which could transport ships between any two planets equipped with such a gate, regardless of distance.... perhaps you could have an orbital fleet manager in orbit instead of taking up valuable space down on the planet. You could even have small orbiting colonies that could provide housing for one billion citizens, thus increasing the planet population and tax revenue.

Would this be something people would be interested in seeing? Or am I just yearning for some things from MOO3.....
EDIT: Why oh why will this not appear in the forum I created it in :SNIFF!:

I'd like to see the AI be able to defend their planets normally, before asking for design improvements that could be best used by a human player.

To avoid unbalancing the game, it would have to cost as much, and takes as much time to build, as an equivalent defensive force based on normal ships. And at that point... why not just build the ships? At least a defensive fleet can be repositioned as needed.

If it cost less and was faster to build than an equivalent fleet, then it just pushes back the first planetary invasions in the game, because everyone would automatically build one as the second thing after a factory. I guess it would be good for players who like to "turtle" and build for a while, before facing a threat. But it might be less fun for those who like a more risky and faster-paced game.
