Big Invasion problem

OK -- this isn't a crasher, but it's making a currently very entertaining game unplayable...
First - specs and drivers are fine (PIV 1.7 gig, 768 meg, 256 meg GeFroce, Windows XP, yada yada... all drivers current).
I'm patched to 1.0X.010 - and current game was started post-patch.
I'm playing a conquest-only sandbox game, using a custom race, on a gigantic map against 9 opponents (2 of which are already now defeated). Now - as you might imagine given game size and settings - this isn't a game that can be finished in a single sitting.... Not that I'm complaining - but even if I could play 12-15-20 hours straight through - I've had my fair share of crashes. I've always sucked it up (and saved games diligently).
For about the third time, the Yor have declared war on me -- our fleets stalemate at the border -- but I get a couple fleets and a custom Troop ship through to their most outlying planet....
Here's where the problem starts... I invade with info-warfare - and when/if I take the planet, at first -- things are OK. The captured planet is nothing special (decent - but not a capital of any sort... pretty much standard PQ 11). Post invasion, planet shows population of about 2 billion (the remainder of my invading force) and an approval of ~60% (right on par with my civ).
When I exit the planet, though -- all hell breaks loose.
Once I hit the main screen - my total population jumps from about 400 billion to something astronomical in the trillions. My approval drops to 1% - but even sliding all the way left, won't budge upwards.
Somehow my influence now covers not only my territory - but ALL of the Yor planets and several other races. ... even though I only took 1 world, and the other Yor planets still show them as the owner.
It's as if by taking this world -- I temporarily receive ALL the YOR (and it appears, other races they are war with) influence and people.
I hit return, a revolt happens - the captured planet becomes independent, and all returns to normal (well... relatively speaking). I've tried saving pre-invasion and re-trying... I've tried backing up to previous games - no matter... always the same defective post-invasion result.
I'll happily send the debug log -- but like I said, game's not crashing, it just WON'T PLAY RIGHT!!!!!
What do I do -- just make peace and try again?
The revolution is really screwing me because while I'm about the sole surviving/saveable "good" race (I set the baddies to Intelligent, good races to normal or worse) -- I do have a nice technical advantage, now suddenly -- there's this minor evil race springing up with all my techs in tow.
