Explosions slow down

is it a bug?

Hi,

I'm loving this game and it's been playable from the get-go. However, I seem to be having a problem with ship explosions. They're tiny little things, for instance when my starbase blew up a drengin heavy fighter. That's a pretty small explosion but there's a noticable (and agravating) pause before it takes place. This has been pretty consistant through the games I've played so far. I turned off throttling and it got better for a time, but now it seems to have gotten slower again. Here are the relevent specs--and yes, I updated my video card drivers, a Geoforce fx 5600 just for this game. So, if anyone has any idea why such little explosions should slow things down so much, I'd love to hear it. It's a great game but the slowdown is annoying.

Hi there.

I'm having a problem with the explosions as well. They are very slow. There are skiped frames. And it looks kind of "extremely" interlaced, meaning the are multiple missing horizontal lines in the explosions.

I also got an GeForce FX 5600. One might complain about my drivers beeing outdated, but I actually tried the newest ForceWare drivers 81.98 but had to return to my somehow older 71.89, since the 81.98 and it's predecessors screw the games graphics videos to menus. Everything looks very "psychedelic" then. Strange colors. Pink blocks and stuff. Hard to identify anything then. So what might cause the slow explosions. Everything else is quite fluid.

Something else: What is the reason for the unfreed memory problems that the last part of the debug.err refers to?

Wow guys, those drivers were written by cavemen I think, they're so old!

3!!!!!!! years old for madjoseph, 1 year old for gambit.

The geforce 5xxx family sucks (and blows... like a hair dryer...) but bring your drivers up to something written on computers instead of typewriters and you should be ok.

As I stated before I already tried the recent nVidia ForceWare Drivers 81.96 from March 2006. But the don't work propper for me. The "corrupt" my graphics as described above.

Though you are right about my sound drivers. I updated both. Though I only use the Realtek AC'97. This one is now from 2/17/2006. I "updated" the Sound Blaster Live! Value driver as well. But since the most recent that I now use is from July 2002 it's not really up to date. Can't do anything about that. But I don't use that soundcard anyway.

The problem with the explosions persists.

As I stated before I already tried the recent nVidia ForceWare Drivers 81.96 from March 2006. But the don't work propper for me. The "corrupt" my graphics as described above.

Though you are right about my sound drivers. I updated both. Though I only use the Realtek AC'97. This one is now from 2/17/2006. I "updated" the Sound Blaster Live! Value driver as well. But since the most recent that I now use is from July 2002 it's not really up to date. Can't do anything about that. But I don't use that soundcard anyway.

The problem with the explosions persists.

Sounds like something screwy with your OS/DirectX/drivers install if the latest drivers don't work for you. Have you tried fully uninstalling them before installing the newer ones?

Try that and reinstallign the game just in case something went wrong there, too.

Hi.

I always uninstall old drivers before I install new ones. I also tried to reinstall the game but that didn't help. I think due to changing the drivers a couple of times my problems have now changed. Now I have no more weird graphics with the nVidia 84.21. But the game is very slow on the map. There are no background stars as well. No fun. I'll continue to use the 71.89 till somebody provides a solution.

I've also got a GeForce FX5600, I'm using driver version 8.1.9.8. No problems here.

Try disabling one of your sound cards to see if that helps - it might be throwing a wobbly as it tries to decide which soundcard to play the explosion sfx on!

I get the same problem with the explosion lag, and I've got an Nvidia Geforce 6800 with 512mb of video RAM and 256mb of System RAM and a 2gb paging file. I'll try the soundcard whatsit.

First off, update the game to version 1.2. Version 1.0 had some problems that have been fixed.


And you may get better results if you run the game at your desktop resolution of 1280x1024 instead of 1152x864.

And you should not have 2 sound cards installed. Either take out the SB (bad idea) or disable the motherboards audio chip from within the mb bios (better idea).

If you get lagged form the explosions, try turning on the 'Simple Explosions" option in the menu.
