Upgrade Freighters

OK, possibly (likely) a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to upgrade freighters that are already commited to a traderoute.
If I click the miniature frighters traveling down the traderoutes the 'upgrade' buton is greyed out????

Any help would be very much appreciated!

You cant as far as i am aware. There is no real need to either as they all move at a constant speed once locked into a route.

Only reason to upgrade a freighter is to get it to the destination faster after you first launch it.

Yar.... I figured this out after breaking about 10 trade routes while trying to put faster ships on the route. Very stupid of me to do.

Indeed, once a trade route is established there is no need to do anything to upgrade it. It will just chug along at 1 parsec singing songs all the way.*

*Note, you can only hear the song from maximum zoom in level. It turns out that all freighters listen incessantly to "Yellow Submarine." Who knew?

Actually, Upgrading Frieghters with better senor packages can be a nice way to keep an eye on the AI and make sure that they aren't getting any ideas

Also makes them more survivable if they can scoot faster. Since you can make incredibly fast frieghters its a rather good tactic. Ever watch 6 yor fleets chase a single frieghter across a Gigantic galaxy for 20turns only to run slam into Big brother and his fleet of Lucky Rangers? I liked it so much i had to save them game just to show my friends. Mucho Yor Space dust

When I make my freighter Mk II's I like to add 1 or 2 impulse Mk III engines and then a load of life support. This means my freighters can reach the most distant planets, which gives the trade route a good average weekly income.
