Okay, I know most of you wont like this so dont slam me... but i dont like the ship builder option. Maybe I will once I know the Tech Tree better but right now its just frustrating. Are there any RECIPES out there on what techs I need to build say, a frigate or battle cruiser, etc..? Its hard to know what to research to get the good ships.

Well... You need to research the appropriate hullsizes first. Then, add weapons and other systems to it. Try to add weapons that your opponents cannot properly defend against. For example, if you are at war with the Drengin, and they specialize in shields, then you should focus on massdrivers or missiles for your ships.

Really, just try to counter the weapons and defenses of your opponents when designing a new ship.

To get the "good" ships it's easy - research the hull size line of tech (Pink technologies)
If you want to add "good" weapons to it, research the Red line of technology
If you want to add "good" engine, research the light blue.
If you want to add "Good" deffense, research the purple.

In case the above post was unclear, you are almost always better off designing your own ships. I suggest checking out the tutorials in the game as well.
