AI Fleet Cheese

One thing that I commonly notice in my games, is AI civilizations stacking a single square with 1 fleet (with their maximum logistics capability), and also on that square, placing about 15-25 more ships that are not in a fleet. This is a serious problem in combat, because when my fleet does combat with their fleet, and defeats it, all of their remaining ships are cannon fodder in my consequent "moves", as I pick off everyone of those ships individually. The end result is one of my mediocre fleets, defeating a single fleet of theirs, and 25 individual unfleeted ships that could have been placed in fleets, and quite easilly defeated my fleet in a subsequent attack. I've seen this in 1.0D, 1.0X.009 and the current 1.0X10. In my opinion this should be a high priority bug, as it totally undermines the AIs combat capabilities and effectiveness. Mind you this was on a Masochistic Difficult.

I have noticed this as well. I figure there must be a rally point there, and every time a new ship arrive it evaulates it for the "fleet". The best ships are in the fleet, but then there are a dozen that could be in other fleets but it doesn't group them.

lol

its so buggy, that at one point I was at war with an enemy and I never encountered any of its ships till i got to his homeworld, next to its homeworld were over 70 unfleeted ships all stuck there, he didnt use them at all, I just farmed them to make my massive ships have over 400hp each.

oh this is most likely a rally bug.

I have seen this occur in a single game in the version prior to the 1.0x patch. But it only crept up once.

i had a square with the same problem but instead of just stacked ships there were stacked fleets, my ships were much better quality but it was a fleet of 6 on a fleet of 6 and it was like that with about 10 fleets.

Yep, have seen this in every game, all patches. They make great farming for getting your ship's HP up, but I agree it is pretty cheesy. I do see a mix of 1 AI Fleet + 10-30 individual ships, as well as 1-3 AI Fleets + 5-10 individual ships, all stacked in the same spot, but it is more common that there is just 1 fleet and lots of individuals.

On the same note, I also see many AI fleets that are close enough to attack my fleet, but don't. They just sit there 'guarding' or whatever, waiting for me to attack them next round, which obviously gives me the attacker advantage. Had they attacked, they might have defeated me - but if I get the first shot in, I usually win (otherwise I wouldnt have attacked of course )

I noticed the same thing. The fleets should be formed faster in the "waiting stack", and the AI could put them to use faster as well.

Exactly. After one my fleets farmed that 30+ ship unfleeted stack, it was powerful enough to roll through everything they had to throw at me and more. Eventually I eliminated all of their 150+ ships over the course of the next 10-15 turns with that single massive experience fleet of mine.

*bump*

Is Stardock aware of the problem? If not, we should bring it to attention.

I've notified the developers of this thread. I'm certain it will be looked into. Thanks for the description.
