?? about autopilot

I'm not sure how the autopilot handles extra movement points at the end of its journey.

It "seems" that autopilots move after you hit the end turn button. If the autopilots destination is 1 tile away, and the ship has 8 movement points, it "seems" that those points are wasted.

Am I falling victim to an illusion? Is there some setting that can make your autopilots move oh, say,at the BEGINING of a turn? (Seems like that would be an easy solution, if there actualy is a problem here)

Im sure I am missing something completely simple and everyone is pointing and laughing at me....

And yes, I have "skip leftover moves after autopilot" unchecked.... but it seems to me silly to even have the option since it appears that autopilot only engages after you end the turn.....

Im really missing something here...maunal says you will be prompted when extra moves are available after autopilot... but , umm, autopilot moves after you end the turn, thus meaning you cant use the movement till next turn, and you get no prompt of any sort I can see.

I feel like I cant see the trees for the forest here, this has got to be something I am missing.

Depends on the autopilot being used. If its the exploration or survey autopilot it'll select a new destination as soon as it reaches its current destination. If the autopilot was enabled simply by you setting a destination and it is the autopilot that makes the final move, any extra movement points are lost -- which makes sense, because it doesn't have anything to use those extra points for.

EDIT: The manual is actually kinda. . . out of date. Alot of things were changed after it was printed.

Actually, there's an option in the game's option menu about auto-pilot left-over moves.

Go check it out, it's basicaly an option that says "Skip moves left from auto-pilot"

Maybe that's what you're looking for?

I wish it were that easy

I also have the automatic end turn option turned off....

Strange that you must click "end turn" to make your auto pilots move.... isnt that how you get yours to move? Am I the only one who thinks to myself... "wow so many autopilot moves, and I really hate to hit this green end turn button...."
Is there a keyboard shortcut not listed in manual to force them to move? Am I misunderstanding the purpose of those interface options? (skip auto moves = off, auto end turn = off)

Yes, I've noticed this too. I just take all my ships off of auto-pilot once they get close to their final destination. I never knew there was a setting in options, but you are right, that setting makes no sense. Since your auto-pilot turns are taken after you press end turn, there's no chance for the game to give you leftover moves from auto-ploted ships.

I haven't found a shortcutk ey to force auto moves and yes I've checked in the manual. Very weird that the game does auto-pilot like this.

Just keeping the topic alive so that anyone who might come out of hibernation with this knowledge could maybe share it.

This way you have the opportunity to override the autopilot while the ship still has movement points.

The skip leftover moves after auto-pilot setting appears to do nothing. At this time there appears to be no way to force autopilot moves during your turn. Its incredibly painful micro-management to have to watch every autopilot ship and take it off autopilot before it gets to its destination but that is the only choice to the player. Maybe they are planning on doing something about this in an upcoming patch, but I haven't seen anything about it.

In GalCiv 1, you'd hit end turn, all your autopilot ships would start moving, and if one of them had left over moves, it would center you there and delay the end of the turn so you could give it more instructions (and the end turn button turned into a "skip" button if you wanted to leave it there).

In GalCiv II, it looks like it centers you (at least, it does if you have the option set properly), but then forgets to delay the end of the turn so you continue to the next turn immediately and the extra moves are wasted. I'd classify that as a bug.

Ok then, lets go bug the bug techs

In Civ4, it would cycle through your units and automove in the middle your turn. I didn't like this as to preemptively stop a unit's automove you had to have one active unit not doing anything at the start of your turn. I didn't play GalCiv 1, but the concept being talked about seems to be a good solution. There could also be a force autopilot moves button

I just now noticed that, after reading the topic again.

Ok, so If I do not want to waste movement points (and show me someone who does), then I must manualy move each ship only as far as it can go per turn. Because it makes sense that any extra moves should be wasted?
Except for one small detail.... you are supposed to be prompted to use those unused movement points. There is even a box to check if you DONT want to be promted to use them.... which does not work.
