Population Overload!!!

How do you control population? I think almost every one of my planets with very low morale is that way because its overcrowded, but aaside from building colony ships, and then destroying them, I do not see a way of controlling population. This is bothering me. If I just let the planet builds these ships, I tie up resources I need to fend offf the Drath legion, and the population growth seems to be greater than my building of the colony ship.

Help!!!

It's best not to build more than one farming building in each planet, because constructing more needs in turn an equal or sometimes greater number of entertainment improvements to balance out the morale. If you have enough space you can build more, but don't go over the top.

Yeah, just decommission any extra farms on planets that have too many people. All the corpses from the starving masses, and the resulting population drop, will make the rest of your people happy.

otherwise, you just have to research more effective means of entertainment, lower taxes, or find some morale resources to mine.

Generally I don't build farms until after I have planetary invasion and am ready to storm an enemy system. Then I build an entertainment unit and one farm unit. It is quite a balancing act, because you need enough pop. for your transports, but not so many that you have no morale or production. Also, your non-military planets don't need as high a pop. since they won't be popping out transports. Consider using freighters and trade routes to bring in income in place of increased taxes from larger populations. I've found it's easier with lower populations and improved economy, than high population tax base with weaker economy/trade.

Have all your overpopulated planets produce nothing but troop transport ships, and launch them right away.

No, that's no longer an option in GalCiv II. Population tends to increase faster than you can get people out with transports. The best option is to limit farms, but don't ignore them either, since more population also means more military, social and research productiveness. Try to find a balance.

I beg to differ as last night I had to stop making transports on one planet due to population drop from launching them.

I have to agree with Roarck. I had my galactic population graph plummet on a large galaxy when I had only 2-3 planets (out of about a dozen total) producing transports with an automatic rally point.

I also build one entertainment improvement per farm. I can usually run 49% taxes without many problems.

Stop building too many farms, send away some transport ship and donate them to an AI you want to get close too or to the pesky minor races, they love them.

I have found that by building Cultural center and stock market your popularity increases no matter the amount of people in the planet. I had a planet recently on 37% approval, I built 3 cultural centers and they went up to almost 65% happy. So there are ways to deal with over population.

Population doesn't effect Military, Social, or Research production. The only thing it does effect is tax money, which I suppose is indirectly related to those other things.

Cultural centers improved morale? That's a new one....

Also, the developers have been saying the morale booster improvements only affect BASE morale. What are the contributing factors to higher/lower BASE morale?

Are you sure? I'd swear the other day the research productiveness improved when population grew.
