A newbie Q

Well Im taking forever in the first campaign mission. The drengin are going beam, and that seems to be my only option too.
But I have no option for researching shields.. only armor.

So my question is: Is part of the tech tree locked/invisible in the campaign?

Yes, it is locked for that part of the campaign. One way to get shield defenses to counter the Drengin beam weapons is to build starbases that give "defense assist" to beam. This will give any ship in a radius around the starbase a beam defense.

I had the same question but for a different reason. I kept getting those quarterly reports that said I should set up trade routes and have a universal translator. I found the UT, but I couldn't find anything for trade! Then my buddy clued me in that the research tree is somewhat nerfed for the campaign missions. So, I'm strictly in crush & burn mode now No pussy-footing around!
