What do others do if you dont get any good nearby planets?

I am having a hard time on Tough difficulty

Im just curious what others do if they only manage to colonize 3 planets without any >10

Im playing on large galaxy, occasional stars, abundant habitable worlds, loosly clustered, with 6 opponents all on Challengin AI. I have been having a *&(^*& of a time, although I must say the Wiki is great and has helped me quite a bit understanding the economics and approval.

SO one possible reason I am considering is that I usually keep playing no matter what, even if I get a poor planet load out early on. In the last two games after the initial 'colonizing rush' I only had 4 colonies, all raning from 8-10 quality. No big ones. Im curious if others try to play through the game on Tough with such a load out, or if you re-start if you dont get at least 5 colonies or at least one or two big planets.

That depends on the kind of player you're.
I had lot of success playing with only 3 planets against 7-8 of the ai playing a full diplomatic game (on challenge settings).


In my current game i managed to colonize only 6 planets (of which only one very good : 18) against the 8-10 of each AI (all AI on genius) and now after 10 hour of gameplay i have around 20 planets and waging war with around 50 large ships against hundreds of medium draths ship popping out every turn (they havce like 30 industrial planets !!!).
This after eliminating the Altarians on a sneak invasion on their key planets while they were occupied on a two front wars



The bottom line is i guess even start without much luck.. usually at least a god opportunity present itself in the game through good use of diplomacy is up to you to seize it !

My threshold seems to be about 4 colonys. If I only get 3, I am just too handicapped to pull out from under Tough AI. In other games where I get 5 or 6, I can eventually overcome another civ that started with double the number of worlds I did.

I actually have enjoyed the maps where I am fighting from behind for my survival better than the ones where I have twice as many planets after the initial rush than the AI...
