Guard Command / Planetary Defense

If you place a fleet just outside a planet and order it to guard, will it defend the planet against invasion from all sides? Or does guard only apply to that square?

I'm just wondering if I should place fleets off planet in the absence of orbital fleet managers.

The "guard" command only tells your ship not to be focussed until an enemy ship comes into its sensor range AFAIK. Thus no, it's not what you want, that's what orbital fleet managers are for exclusively.

If you don't have orbital fleet managers, you could park a fleet outside your planet, and set to "auto attack". Any ships come into sensor view, and the fleet will chase after it. Just be careful with that - your planet will be undefended, so you'll need to remember to bring the fleet back after they destroy the invader!

Yeah, the real solution is an Orbital Fleet Manager, a Planetary Defense building, and some ships with good attack and defense in orbit. A nearby military starbase helps too.

Here's what you'll probably want to do if you dont have a fleet manager. Put a fleet outside your planet, and set it to gaurd. What happens is, it'll ignore that ship until an enemy ship comes within like 5 squares, then it focuses on that ship. At that point, just attack the ship with your fleet!

Keep it stupid, simple.

Keep in mind that your fleet can't interrupt an enemy, though, so they can always hit you with a very fast transport ship and take your undefended planet.

What I usually do is build a "interdiction fleet". A fleet of small (or bigger) ships with good attack and some basic speed (2+) but no need for sensors of life support. Put that fleet near the planet and put them as Sentry or Guard. (Sentry activate the ship if there's a "Non-Allied" ship that come within sensor range. Now I know that a ship with no sensors would be easy to bypass so what I also do is build a cargo or whatever and fill it with sensors. Sensors cost next to nothing to build and since that ship will be "non-combatant" it dosn't need speed/defence/attack or life support wich bring the total cost for a cargo under 100bc/ship (with the hull costing 55). Put that ship right out of the orbit in Sentry mode and then unless you are facing really fast ships (like 5pc/week fast), you'll be warned (The ship will activate and the "turn" button won't be green (use "find" to find which ship is activated) and be able to use your "interdiction fleet" to counter.

At least that my tactic. In the long run it's safer that way (you only keep build Interdiction ships as long as the sensors ships are safe.
