Noob ? about shields

Ok so I can see where you can research armor for your ships.
I don't see any techs that give your ships any other types of defences.
I do see modules you can put on your starbases for shields... but nothing for mobile ships.
I don't see the 3rd type of defence, the one for missiles, anywhere.

I have surfed, but it seems everyone already has this knowledge and thus there is no discusion of it.

Where can I find info concerning how to put defences other than armor on my ships?

the three defenses are researched in the tech tree, which is laid out like this:

Galactic Warfare

Space Militarization
|
|
v
Space Weapons
| |_> Planetary Invasion
| |_> Starbase Weapons
| |_> (ATTACK TECH 1) Beam Weapon
| |_> (ATTACK TECH 2) Mass Driver
| |_> (ATTACK TECH 3) Missile Weapon
|
|_> (DEFENSE TECH 1) Armor Theory
|_> (DEFENSE TECH 2) Missile Defense Theory
|_> (DEFENSE TECH 3) Shield Defense Theory
|_> Starbase Fortification

To put defenses other than armor, you just have to research the correct techs. The tech tree can be confusing because it does split between defense and attack after "space weapons".

Another possible answer is that you're playing the campaign. Shields and point defense are not available at the start of the campaign, but will be later.
