What's the point of playing a custom race?

I've noticed that the races in the game have hard-coded abilities that can't be unpicked, like the Thalan's miniturization bonus and logistics bonus. The custom races however don't get any additional comparable abilities, which makes me ask what is the point of being allowed to make a custom race if they are inherently inferior compaired to the default races? edit: Err, disregard this post. I just realized that I was wrong, and stupid. Custom races get the logistics bonus too. Weird that the yor get miniturization and logistics. I guess that is balanced out by that fact that most people hate them.

hard-coded abilities might not necessary suit your playing style.
and thus.. you customize to fit your need.

Say if you don't ever bother with espionage and sensor range, points invested in espionage and sensor would be wasted for the pre-built race to you.

You can also edit the raceconfig.xml to your liking as well.

You can also tweak the starting techs for custom races

Theoretically, being able to fine tune a race too your choosing would balance out against the hardcoded abilities. So ..yes a custom race could be worse than the defaults or it could be better depending on how you put them together and how you play.

Tip: use custom to focus on a few select abilities that go well with your play style. remember that techs will provide bonuses as well.

I know

My first tech i blitz to in the past has almost allways been Universal Translator -- my current custom configuration allows me to start with this, allowing me to research other techs instead

Can you add "Default" races? So that there are more than 10 to choose from?

Can you edit the color of the other races ships?

I would like to be able to add multiple custom races in a game (instead of only one in the game and the rest being "preset" races).

Is there a way to simply change the races names, so that I can change my playing environment from game to game (let's say, star trek, then babylon, then whatever). I don't mind much about the portraits, but the names it would be nice .
and in galciv 1 we could easily define the Ais alignement. Is that over as well? Definetly over?
