Does miniturization work?

I have researched through basic miniturization and have not noticed components (such as weapons) taking up less space. Is this supposed to work in a different way?

Yes, it increases the space on your ship by that ammount. Unfortunately, this means that you only get 50% more room if you reach minituarization 50, instead of getting double. Just check the available space on your hulls before and after miniturization, I think it rounds down as well though.

Hmmm. I'm gonna have to look at the Race customization stuff and see if they get a miniaturization bonus, then. I'd love to be able to pile on some extra engines into my class 0 ships.

The Yor, IIRC, are the only race to get a miniturization bonus.

Thalans, not the Yor. The Yor get a logistics bonus I think.

No. At standard setiings the Yor get 25% Miniturization and a Logistics Bonus.

the yor get +8 logistics and +25% miniaturization
thalans get 10% mini

So miniaturization still sounds useful. I mean, a ship with 50 'units' would go to 55 with only a 10% bonus (yes, I know, stand in awe of my amazing math skills). The cap is only +50% (not including racial bonuses) when developing all techs in that field?

The cap is +100%. The 50% stated earlier was as an example. There are 6 levels of miniaturization, giving 10%, 15%, 15%, 15%, 20%, and 25% respecively. Research all the way up the tree and you effectively double your ship size.

Oh, no, quite a bit larger than that. At least one of the techs is +25% all by itself, plus there's a miniaturization superproject and a miniaturization random event. I seem to remember that the final total is close to +100%, which doubles the size of the hulls.

Sadly, part of the size of most components comes from the hull it's placed in, meaning that some things get larger when you put them in a larger hull, so you really don't get all of your miniaturization bonus. The later weapons/defenses/engines/etc tend to scale less, so miniaturization benefits them more than the early versions.
