Help with Invading a planet

I'm still totally new to this game, and I'm having trouble invading enemy planets (the Drengin.)
My fleets have wiped out all his orbital defenses, and are continuously hovering around the planets ready to pounce a single fighter as soon as it comes out of the shipyard (it's very cool that the AI realised his beam designs weren't working against my shields 8, and has switched to missile designs, that's awesome).

So now I've been sending in troop ships to try to conquer his planet. Except that I can only make a fleet of two troop ships, so at most I can have 2000 people with me, and he has 10.000 on his planet. So I get wiped out. Then I get to wait 11 more weeks for two more troops ships to build, by which time he's already rebreeded his 2000 or so warriors that he's lost. So I'm not getting anywere...

Any suggestions, hints, ideas? Help?

Research logistics so you can have bigger fleets with more transports.

Research ground combat techs to give your troops a tech edge in combat.

Have more troop transports on hand. If you get wiped out in your first wave, send the next ships in and so on till you take him out.

redesign troop ships maybe? Stick on more troop modules ?

Or get Advanced Troop modules. 1 of those has twice as many troops as the basic one plus they take up less room.
not to mention along the way you'll get soldier bonuses.

Another trick/exploit, use one of the advantage techs to try and take out as many soldiers as possible, and attack in waves.

You can use Planetary Bombardment, bt it will damage the planet, so be carefull.

Custom build a troop transport!
Even 1 more troop pod would make those 2 ships carry another 1000 b between them. You've probably already got much more slimeline engines when you get hold of Planetary invasions tech.

In the late game I like to make fleets of VERY fast troop transports, a transport moving 36 parsecs is no easy target!

what ships are used to bombard planets?


You have to research planet bombardment.

You bombard planets in the pre-invasion screen when you are choosing your invasion method. If you don't really care about the planet (or you are playing the campaign and will win once the planet is conquered anyway) then feel free to hurl asteroids or detonate the planetary core to make your invasion successful.

EDIT-there could be a separate method of bombarding planets I haven't found yet.
