Can Someone Explain Range?

I just started a game and I have a ship with 0.2 sct range. The manual says that this limits how far I can go from my planets or bases but I have been all over the map with that ship (definitely more than 0.2 sectors outside my teritory). How does this work? I assumed that a sector is one large square (so the first campaign game has 9 sectors). Can anyone explain this?

Allow me to tune in here as I have a range related question as well (I think):

What are "Life Support" extras for the ships for? Am I correct in the assumption that they extend the range a ship can travel from the nearest StarBase or planet?

And I too would like the question from the first poster explained..

I'm pretty sure you're right about life support extending the range but since range doesn't seem to work the way I thought it did we're still in the dark.

Yes.

BTW, normally, when selecting a ship, there is an area border telling you where you ship can go.

Have you tried to use the various buttons over the minimap?

There are severaly early missions in the campain were range is disabled. To make them a bit easyer. But as you get further along you will need more lifesupport to travel further frome your worlds or bases.

In the normal game there is definetly the range notion.
The life support techs ad range to all your ships and offer the possibility of adding extra modules in the design that allow for even further range. And it is useful too and necessary if you play medium maps or bigger.

And if you clicl in one of the first ships, say the defender, and zoom out a bit, you will see the thin grey line delimiting its range.

Also if your galaxy is tiny or small even the smallest range may include most if not all of the map.
