STAR CONTROL in SOASE / Master of Orion

Greetings All,

I just wanted to get this thread going, so hopefully there are others out there like me.  Is there anyone oit there who would like to see the STAR CONTROL or Master of Orion races in the game?  I am a huge fan of these, and still play them today.  These classic space games first wet my appetite for space strategy games, and I would love to see them brought to new life in the Sins world.  If there is anyone out there who wants this or is interested in helping it become reality, please post here!  I have found some 3DMax models out on the web, but I don't have 3DMax to convert them to the Sins format.  So anyone who can do this please let me know.

Calling all modders!!!!

Hello Danman,

I'm a fan of Master of Orion II as well. In my opinion, it is the best space strategy game ever created and probably that ever will be created. It was released in 1996 and I've been waiting ever since for a worthy successor to MOO, but so far, many excellent games have fallen short.

For those of you unfamiliar with the game, I'll try to list a few of the features that made it special.

Ships had hull, shield, armor, engines, weapons, sensors, and personell. There were weapons specialized to damage each of these. For example, ion weapons to drop thier shields, gyro destabilizers to damage the hull, neutron beams to kill the personell, etc. The ships had upgrades to counter them, such as reinforced hull to counter gyro destabilizers, extra shields, extra armor, etc. This created tactical variety as you tried to design your ships to counter your opponent's ships.

Shields had four facings. When a shield became weak or went down, you could rotate your ship to try to keep the weak shield away from your enemy. This added to the tactics during a fight.

Planets had missile bases, star bases, fighter squadrons, and planetary beam weapons defending them. Attacking a planet with a fleet had a lot of interesting tactics dealing with all of these.

If you took down an opponent's shield, you could beam your marines over and have them try to destroy particular systems, such as the engines or weapons.

You could equip your ships with assault shuttles and send them to board the starbases, destroying systems or even taking them over completely.

There was a huge variety of special systems you could research and add to your ships such as black hole generators, teleporters, etc. You could design your ships, allocating weapons, engines, defensive systems, etc.

Ships could be equipped with point defense. They would shoot down incoming missiles. They would shoot down incoming missiles heading towards other ships in your fleet if they were close enough. When closing on a planet, one of the things I did was use a formation that maximized point defense.

Instead of bombing planets into oblivion, you could send in the marines and take it over. Then you had to manage the happiness of the local population. The different races had different special abilities. You kept the special abilities of the population on the planet.

The best planets were defended by bosses. You could steal technology. You could use spies to incite rebellion or knock out critical planetary defenses prior to invasion.

These are just a few of the features of Master of Orion II. It put all of this together in comprehensive way that has yet to be matched. I hope that someday, a developer will make another game like it only with updated graphics. Most of those things are beyond the realm of modding though.

Cheers,
Silvermane

I also miss adventure from space strategy games. Taking MOO 2 aspects would spice up the game for me. Random events, more special items (for example ancient indestructible [self slowly movable?]planet defences that can be brought online for balanced price), heavily guarded planets (systems? mid game conquerable) with artifacts/exotic ships/special resources/ancient production bays etc. I also liked very much rogue trader in one space strategy game. Buying really expensive exotic ships would be nice. I hope I have similar thinking modders.

And missions. Timer should start counting when I accept mission. Then I choose when to attack and who. Killing enemys enemies should give a little appreciation from fraction that is in war with it.

you guys make me wana play MOO2 again :)

One thing a game like MMO2 had was the abilty to have massive fleets running around something GC2 missed out on IMO it has a toon more planet micro but less fleets while MMo2 had more fleets and elss planet micro.

sigh...

How I miss the Moo series before Atari screwed it up with moo3... They just kept pushing the guys to release a game that just was not ready.

To all who have replied so far:
I am SOOOO glad I am not the only one who misses MOO2. And yes, the did make MOO3, but it was horrible. The space exploration and the planet graphics were good, even better, but the battles absolutley sucked. The fun of MOO2 was designing the ship and then seeing it in action as you controlled it in battle. MOO3 took this away. A game that was not ready to be released...excactly. I was waiting for some awesome update that would fix all the problems, especially the battles....that never came. It was a huge let down. Since then I have played many other space strategy games that have all fallen short. Only Sins so far has captured some of those aspects, but needs to be improved to get that MOO2 feeling back.

Also, don't discount the Star Control series. Star Control 1 & 2 were probably some of the best space explore, battle, and adventure games out there, with Star Control 3 coming in behind. Nothing got your heart beating like going into battle with the
Ur-Quan for the first time, a 10,000 year old race of giant catapillars that enslaved all races that did not join their heirachy of battle thraws. They had these huge green ships that looked like boxier versions of Romulan ships, that launched waves of fighters and would blast you with plasma torpedeos.
Tha games consisted of over a dozen races, either good or bad, all struggling for control or survial. The player played a human in possesion of an ancient Precusor ship, able to be customized with weapons and such as the player saw fit and had the money and tech to do so. It was your mission to united races together into an Alliance of Freestars to fight the Ur-Quan Hierarchy and free the galaxy from their rule.

What I would like to see is at least bring the races from these awesome games into Sins, either as separate race factions or together as 2 selectable races, one from each game. If there is a way to encorporate some of the gameplay, that would be great, but I think is impossible at this time. Just getting some of the races and their ships in would be more than awesome.

The 3DMAX files that I have come across are all from Star Control so far, but I don't have 3DMAX to use them. Anyone out there who has 3DMAX and would like to help with this project please post here! I can help with the textures, as I have already started on my own retexturing mod for Sins. I would also like to incorporate Uzii's planets Mod and Bailknight's graphics mod into this new Orion/Star Control mod. Having lots of different planets to explore are one of the things that really added fun to these classic games.

Again, calling all modders interested!

I really hope developers are listening. Last time they were, UFO: Afterlight came out. It is also one of my favourite sci-fi games. As they themselves wrote, PC gamers are different breed than console players. Strategy is victorious. Starcraft still ownes this genere but SoSE is strong second with Homeworld.
I really hope expansion/spinoff will be MOO reborn.

PS Sorry for mistakes, english not native.

Yes, hopefully the developers are listening. And MOO and Star Control will be reborn

Chasington:
Will you be the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za or the Kohr-Ah?

Will you enslave all or destroy all...that is the question!

Bubsy22:

I hope you can come to my *party* and we can *dance* together! We *ORZ* have many *happy* places. We do not Arilou though, they make us *frumpy*, and Androsynth make us *frumpy*. But humans make a very *happy*, we wish to *party* with them!!!

It411:
YES! Master of Orion. You have correctly described this masterpiece of a game. I loved the last phrase during the ending of Master of Orion2,:
"Your armies mach across all worlds, your fleets have conquered every corner of the galaxy....ha.ha.ha....THIS GALAXY! You have proven without a doubt, to be the MASTER OF ORION!!!

Moo2 was great, Star Control 2 is one I still pop in and play every now and again. I say do it.

MOO2.. The best ever turn based strat game, ever. Designing my own ships was an indulging experience. My favourite combi is the neutron blaster and transporter (to raid and capture ships). But first, I usually fire one very powerful shield reducing beam weapon with enveloping modification (forgot its name) to reduce enemy's shields before boarding.

The stellar converter is a kick ass weapon only for its planet destroying capabilities (throw in a cool planet destroying video cutscene). Other than that, it's a waste of space on Doomstars =)

Star Control 2... Ah.. such fond memories.. Ur-Quan, Chrome (That ship with the 3 satelites rotating around it), Arilou (little saucer thingie), and that uber black ship with the shriken weapon that will keep spinning as long as you hold the fire button down, and its super uber ring of fire special attack.

Great times

I miss those times  :)

I had high hopes for Stars! Supernova, but it never got proper funding.

rantzzz1998,
Ah... the Stellar Converter. This made all those Death Star dreams come true. The weapon in question I believe was the plasma cannon, able to envelope and take down all 4 sheilds, allowing a nice hit from the neutron blaster or death ray before sending in the marines...good times.

The Chmmr was the thing that looked like an Xwing with satellites, and the Kohr-Ah Maruader was the uber black death ship with the spinning blades and the super f.r.i.e.d. weapon. (Fiery Ring of Inevitable and Eternal Destruction)
YES. I played this game WAY to much!!!

I am so glad to be hearing these comments, now if I can only get some help putting this into place!

Toxidyne:
I never heard of it, but I am sure it was promising.

Would love to help, but I would be useless. All those hours spent terraforming planets so I could have an empire of Gaia's instead of learning 3d modeling :)

WTB terraforming in sins

For that kind of playable game coming out I am willing to spend double the SoSE cost in pre-order. MOO, X-COM, SC 2, Starcraft, Outpost 2, Ascendancy etc players have evolved into higher payed citizens and are cash cows and can be milked for a lot of cash and the developer who takes this into consideration can make a fortune.

A little off topic here, but, does anyone know how to play MoO2 on Windows XP?

I wouldn't say Star Control races are "evil" or "good". Just because the Ilwarth like to kill and torture things doesn't make them evil. Heck, the Ur-Quan Kzer-Ka's reasons for enslavement are actually quite noble.  :p

thats so true

but (cash)cows tend to be dumb and waste their money for a low-quality alike and wonder
later why there are only low-quality games out

maybe if lost empire immortals has its bugs squashed you will have a nice real 4xtbs

either doubleclick on one of the orion*.exe or you can try dosbox and use the dos-executable for fast multiplayer games (even networked games are possible)

The idea that anyone could go any length of time without seeing MoO2 fannishness boggles the mind. MoO2 fanatics are a given wherever spaceships appear, and they always have a very interesting idea of what makes a game 'good'. :)

That said, I was throwing the idea of a Star Control mod around when Sins came out, and I'm not sure enough of the ships translate from 1v1 2-weapon fighting to an RTS. Things like the Earthling cruiser are fine, but the Spathi? You'd need to make it a really, really big fighter to have it work properly. I'm not sure there are enough 'capital ships' per faction either - AFS has 1, old Hierarchy has 1 (maybe 2), NAFS has 1 or 2, new Hierarchy has 2. I eventually decided to make 'capitals' just 'hero' versions of other classes and make the big three 'heavy cruisers'.

I haven't tried this myself, but maybe DOSBOX? It was dos wasn't it?

I forgot about Asendancy and X-COM! Another set of great games.

CalibanXXX:
donwload and use DosBox - it works everytime.

Busy22:
You are right, but it was the point of enemy of friendly that I was trying to get across. You have to love the Ilwrath and their twin gods Dogar and Kazon. Love it. They reminded me of Klingons that were insects. The whole cloaking and looking like a bird of prey..sweet.

Dari:
Yes, if the "cash-cows" spent money on quality games, then more quality games would be made, instead of huge let down type games.

Pnakotus:
Yes, MOO2 took a LONG time to complete, but the feeling was awesome. To know that you totally ruled the galaxy and was the MASTER OR ORION was a huge payoff.
Now, about Star Control, I am glad that you suggested it when Sins came out, but it seems like no one is working on it. I intend to work on it and release it to the masses, I just need some help.
About the ships, that's where my previuos post came it. I agree with you about the ships. I don't think every race in Star Control should be a separate race in Sins. Rather, a few races would join together to form one selectable race in Sins, just like in Super Melee back in the day of Star Control. For example, both Ur-Quans can join up to form one race along with members of the Heirarchy. You can have the Chenjensu, the MMRRRMM, and the Chrmmr all form one race, representing all of their ships. Grouping the races to form bigger races, that way they get represented in Sins. You could also form the New Alliance of Freestars all into one Sins race. That is my idea. I would love to create 10 ships or so for each race, but that is way beyond my scope or my ability. I can't even do 3D models yet! So far, I can retuxture rather well, and you can see what I have done with my other mod, the "Ancient Ones" or "Atlantians" where I have changed stats, abilities, and textures for the Vasari.
That being said, have you actually started a Star Control mod? If so, I would love to see/play it! Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you all, keep'em coming. I still need help!!

Oh I agree re ships: you'd have to make 'factions' where each shiptype is a 'race' from Star Control. However, I'm not sure the factions would balance well unless you dumped many ships, and 'chronologically' I'm not sure what you'd do - taking the NAFS post-Chmmr is completely retarded because they will simply win, but taking the AFS pre-Ur-Quan conquest is also broken because there's only 7 ships, one is a fighter and only one is very big. You'd have to use a bit of 'creative license', especially with ships that wouldn't work without major tweaking. Customisable Kzer-Za, Kohr-Ah, Chmmr and Chenjesu would be pretty boss.

Trying to invent new ships for the races would just be an exercise in fanfiction. No race has more than one ship (unless they're marks of the same ship) and their entire fleets are uniform - you'd have to make the Alliance or Heirarchy 'races'. Indeed, the setting suggests all kind of planet types and planet bonuses, and you could concievably build a kind of 'adventure' element into it to have ship types locked by planet type (ie, get x race) rather than tech type, so in Star Control fashion you can prevent the enemy building, say, Terminators, by knocking the desert planet out of their empire and killing all the little Yehats.

However, it would make awesome 'neutral' ships: use Slyandro, Melnorme, Druuge and other non-aligned races instead of 'TEC with funny colours'. :)

Pnakotus:
I love your ideas. I plan to use Uzii's new planets mod to increase the different planet types ad bonuses, and Bailknight's graphical mod to change up the graphics. I plan to make "races" out of the different factions, and obviously some Star Control races will be left out. Some fanfiction ships might be made, btu again, all up to time and skill in modeling. I would love it of Bailknight, Uzii and ManShooter can join me n this endeavor, as there mods are awesome and game changing, and that is what I would like to see in this. If you have any more input or modding experience, I would love for you to contribute. The more, the merrier.

Awesome mod, cant wait until you finish the rest of the capitol ships, if you are going to at all. I like the fact that you made the fleet cost so much higher on the stronger ships, improve the rest of the fleet like this and I'll be happy.

DeadlySeraph:
I don't know if your in the right thread, but thank you for the comments. You may be talking about 7 DEADLY SINS, in which the STAR CONTROL and MASTER OR ORION idea will be realized.

To answer your question, the entire Atlantian race will be redone with new ships, like the ones already completed, just a little more balanced. Right now the Battleship is way too powerful.

Thank you posting, and stay tuned!
