Feature Request: Please add map preview option for non-random maps

I'd like to play some of the non-random 2v2 maps since medium random is a bit large for 4 players.  There's just one problem; I can't remember which ones were decent because I can't see the map before the game!

This would be a MUCH appreciated feature.

Man...that's a really brilliant idea.

this would be awesome...

expecially with map sharing.

but its prolly to far along in the dev cycle to add it in.

Agreed.

Frankly, I don't think I've EVER played a non-random map, before.

What's cool about some of them?

The advantage to some of the fixed maps are that they're symmetrical insuring nobody has an advantage, and tend to be smaller than random maps for faster games that heavily discourage having an 'econ player' who can get away with doing nothing but feeding other players all game. Some come with interesting gimmicks such as having a wormhole beside your capital, meaning you have to consider head-on attacks as well as getting hit backdoor.  There's one map where the planets in the main part of the map suck, but there's a central wormhole leading to tons of neutral extractors and asteroids with guaranteed artifacts.  It makes you choose between teching military and trying to win fast, or teching for wormhole navigation early and getting a huge advantage if you're the first one in there.

Problem is of course I forget which ones are which.

WRONG.

the fixed maps are NOT symmetrical.  Resource rocks, militia counts, plantary bonuses (ever had an ice world with massive galciers and fauna?) and artifacts are all not distributed evenly ever.

Which is, of course, absolute BS.

While Pbhead is probably right about it being too late, do want to say I'd really like that feature, too, especially if it would label starting positions. There's even a large open spot in the GUI that almost seems made for it. Having to spend 10-20 minutes exploring a map or using firing up GalaxyForge just to see if I like a map feels wrong.

You could get Galaxy Forge and then just load up the maps and look at them that way.

Yes, but thats not particuarly user freindly is it now.

Got to agree that this would be a great feature. Sure we probably won't get it for release, but waht about as a big patch update?

It'd be nice to  pick starting positions as well if they added the preview.

Some of them are, many of the them are crap though.  Hence why seeing the map preview would help you remember which ones were bad.

Here is the things, say we include a map preview. What are we going to do with maps that have multiple star? How would this mechanic work? People unless you can explain all of the different aspects of the mechanics and how it would affect game play just don't post them.

There is also a reason for not having map preview, sure you would say that many strategy games have map preview. I would argue this, all of those maps are 2-d maps. Sure they might have different elevations, but essentially it is a 2-d grid pattern. Sins is different the planets are in 3d even then. With those 2-d maps, they are created with symmetrical reflections. Our maps aren't.

To ice-27828-

Next time you play, zoom out really far, until you can only see the galaxy with no planets. Mouse over that, and you'll see a different color star, a bunch of decently sized circles. Color code those based on type (either specific, or just habitable/asteroid/noninhabitable; both are fine) with maybe a number in the spawns. Make sure there are stubby little lines to indicate phase lanes.

As for multiple stars? Do the same thing, most people should know the travel between stars/wormhole feature. The only real issue would be if stars overlapped. As for the 2-d map... I think you're exaggerating the issue a bit. A top down view would still work fine for a rough preview. All that's wanted is an idea of a layout, not a map to plan the first 100 moves of off.

Yes also you get a 2d view in galaxy forge.

The descriptions provided are so vague, a constellation map would be enough for me. no additional detail needed. No need to overlap the star maps as it doesn't make much of a difference.
