How is the AI

I originally bought the game at launch but I haven't played much. It was too much RTS and too little 4X for me at the time. Anyway, I was thinking of jumping back in and buying the two expansions but I was wondering if the AI has been improved. Is it challenging in any way or is the meat of the game in PvP?

Two things that I remembered that bothered were that the races were pretty much the same except for minor differences and that playing online took too long.... So, has the game changed since 2008 or is it still as I remember it?

Well I'm mostly an RTS player but honestly I've always found the races to be very different from each other. Yeah all  the races have the same ship types... but other than that they play very differently I think. While the diplomacy aspect of it has been somewhat improved and the defenses can let turtlers get away with longer games against the AI, Sins is still more an RTS as it is intended to be.

The AI is probably overall better than 2008 but no matter how good it gets there are always ways to exploit it (currently its biggest flaw is that it has a hard time judging its odds of success against highly fortified planets). Diplomacy did add two additional harder AI levels in Diplomacy though its primarily a resource cheat. That said its good enough for most of the players to get their money's worth out of the game without going online, especially once you factor in all the mods available.

The game is definitely much more fun in multiplayer. Although the AI is decent-ish and can beat a human who has no idea how to play the game, the strategic depth of the game only becomes clear when you start playing other humans.

Games online can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, sometimes longer if the losing side doesn't know when to give up. It's really not that bad.

The races are quite different and have extremely different play styles. (at least, good players use the different races very differently :))
