Importing Models From Another Game

I have found models from another game that I would like to use but I do not know how to convert from one format to the sins format.

They are bitmap image files and I know that they must be converted for sins but how do you do it?

Isn't porting illegal? Or is that just a few games?

They are models done for other mods for other games, "battleclinic" is where I got some of the models.

The model is that of a cardassian Hutet and these are the image files I downloaded: HutetBS.bmp, HutetTI.bmp and the last is HutetVL.bmp they are bitmap images other than that I don't know. There also GF files and X files, I don't know which of the files I need to convert for sins.

Most of those models at battle clinic are in sfc .mod format you would first need to get premission from the author of the model to convert it then you would need , milkshape , max3,4 or 5 or gmax to convert the model to obj format . Then you would need xsi to convert, remap and hardpoint the model to get it to xsi format for the sins .mesh conversion.  And they said the game was easy to mod ha ha ^_^

Oh and i think if the model has more than 1 texture and its not square ie 512x 512 then the model needs to be remaped with just 1 texture map to show up in game and its got to be converted to dds  ? Correct me on this if i am wrong please anyone.

And no porting is ok if you port a user made model alot of modelers like me will allow porting/converting to other games if you ask premission to do so first. But most game company models it is Illegal to port if you read the licence agreement it should state what you can and cannot do with the content of the game in most cases you cannot convert the stock industry game models.

You are correct on all points.

Porting models over from other games is not a very good idea in general. Models should be ideally be created and skinned for the game you're modding. Even porting some of our work from EaW required a ton of changes and they don't look anything like they did back then.

X( Damn, well thanks for the responses on this.

The models were for personal use and I was doing this because I suck at drawing and wanted to cheat a little  :-" , well I'll try using soft image or one those programs for my modeling.  Thanks!
