Why no upgrade to ship's speed

Like the title says, why no upgrade to increase the speed of ships?

We can upgrade hull, shields, armor, weapons, but why can't we upgrade their speed & acceleration?

it could go like this:

- Speed upgrade 1: +5% for all frigates

- Speed upgrade 2: +10% to all frigates, +5% to all cruisers

- Speed upgrade 3: +15% to all friigates, +10% to all cruisers, +5% to all capital ships

 

And why do all the ships have the same speed:

Scouts: 1000, Basic Assault: 800, Long Range: 500...

Why not give Vasari scouts: 1200, TEC scouts: 1100 and Advent scouts: 1000

Why not give all Capital Ships different speed. For exemple, the Vasari Antorak Marauder could have something like 625 instead of 525. Making it better at raiding enemy positions.

I think this would make each race a little more unique.

Im gonna say the reason we dont see this is for gameplay balance. And the Varasri do get a bonus for speed in their last armor upgrade. It redues the mass which makes everything go faster.

Not all cap ships have same speed as far as I know. And the base speed was boosted for the colonzier caps.

And yes like -Ue_Carbon points out, speed is for balance issues.  There are some abilities that affect speed in the game, and more to come with Entrenchment if I am correct.

The Antorak already has Distort Gravity, which increases its max speed and acceleration by 33%/66%/100%.

Kodiaks have a pursuit ability that gives them a speed boost for a short time.

Yes, I do know all about the special abilities & current upgrades, I'm talking about having the option to research better engines to increase the speed of ALL ships for ALL factions. At first, I too thought like Ue Carbon, but after rethinking about it, it makes no sense, because if it was for balance reasons, then all the weapon/hull/shield/etc. upgrades would also cause an imbalance. Bottom line is, I would like to know why IC did not do it!

Can't answer why it wasn't done, however I agree it would be a useful tech to add to the tree. It might also help with some of the issues people have with the length of the game...faster movement results in shorter games.

You could even have an upgrade option where some of the armor is omitted in exchange for higher acceleration...a very real choice that would effect combat tactics

And would mean that each ship is not exact stats (apart from the cap level mods), which probably is not supported by the game engine - you are basically asking for "Build Ship Type X, Model A" vs "Build Ship Type X, Model B"...

By having frigates 5% faster then cruisers always, you would be able to catch carriers easier though.... Hmmm. Food for thought there...

If you are up to the challenge, you could create a mod for yourself, that will alter the ship's speed in the game
