If I end up with more than one of something, I come up with something on the fly or just leave it as is.

I also tend to try and have some fun with my planets. ie. In particularly long games if I manage to get a Superweapon, I make sure to name the planet it's going on "your base". Reason being I know full well people will either laugh or be confused when they see "An experimental weapon is being constructed at your base".

Alternatively if I'm being invaded I may name my planets(in sequence) "How you doin'?". Or some varient. It's good fun.

Indeed, i'd like name chokepoint planets as Sentinel Alpha, Beta, and so forth, but even the first one is too long for the name field

I usually name my TEC caps after 20th Century British naval vessels, my Advent caps I always name after various psychedelic music tracks, and for the Vasari I name them after either cool sounding German or Russian naval ships or Imperial Star Destroyers.

I always name my ships regardless of the race i play. The names are drawn from all sorts of Sci-fi sources, like warhammer 40K or star wars (the list is pretty short because i usually make the names up as i go along) but most of the time it's in the line of :

Litany of Fury (DoW II anyone ?) 

Righteous Wrath

Beacon of faith

Emperor's light

then it's star wars star destroyer names like

Chimera

Death's Head

... and so on and so on.
